Nice video. I'm a PP equipped SHO owner, so the drain plug is there, but as for filling, this may help. I retained my factory vent hose asm and just pop it off the ******. To refill, I use a clear hose and drop it down from the top and slip it on the PTU ******. I measure the amount of fluid that I drained and put the same amount in the gear oil bottle (I empty the gear oil bottle in the measuring cup and dump the appropriate amount back in the gear oil bottle). Then just slip the clear hose up top on the gear oil bottle ****** and slowly squeeze some down the tube into the PTU. Pull the bottle off and let it burp and repeat 5 or 6 squeezes until the bottle is empty and let the last of it drain down the tube. Filling takes about 10 min or less. I like to do a bit and let it burp since you're filling through the only vent and don't want to pressure stress the lip seals at the axles. By using the clear tubing you can see when all the fluid is drained down the tube from under the car. When your done, just pop the clear tube off the PTU vent ****** and slide the factory hose back on.

So, I’m going to get ready to drill and tap my ptu and I was wondering if there is some sort of fluid I could use to flush the gunk that is accumulates at the bottom. ATF fluid, regular engine oil, brake cleaner..... anyone have any suggestions? The idea being to thin out the gunk and drain it. Then refill with gear oil, run it for 5 minutes or so and drain again before the final refill with a quality fluid.

I sprayed brake cleaner into the funnel. That was a tacky way, but yes, I used that. If I were a real mechanic, I'd have a few gallons of brake clean. That would've been better than using the spray can.

I let it drain out. Then I flushed some ATF through it too. Then I filled it with 2oz of ATF and 14 oz gear oil. I'll run that combo for one oil change. Based on how much gunk comes out when its time to drain it, I'll run it again, and I'll keep running it until no gunk comes out. Then I'll swap to full gear oil and change it every couple of oil changes.

Very clear method of knocking this out, thanks.

I first read it as “20 oz of atf “ lol. I just finished drilling and getting ready to tap it right now so thanks for all the info. The only 1/8-27 npt plug I could get around here is a brass one that is cored. If that doesn’t work I’ll order the one you put the link to. Keep your fingers crossed for me, I’ve never done something like this.

Thanks for the additional info, I am going to get it done sometime this week but right now I’m opening up 4 boxes with some New Shelby CS1 20x9 wheels in matte black. I’m totally lookin forward to seeing how they look on my SHO!
I would like to see the rims on your ride too.

It feels scary, but in the end, it's not. Just don't doubt the method. Once you have faith in that, you're golden. And in the end, you'll have faith in yourself, because you accomplished it.

Got it done last night, took about an hour from starting pilot hole to tapping threads. I want to flush the PTU but I need to put front drivers side brakes back together (rotors got rusty) so that I can put it into gear in order to activate the PTU. Been waiting for a long time to do this and your video View attachment 14187 View attachment 14187 really helped. Once again, what a great forum and bravo to you Iqoniq!

Awesome. Glad to be of use, and good luck.

By the way, I didn't put it in gear to flush the PTU. I just did a still flush and then filled it. Because I'll be changing it with the next oil change, both to check on the fluid and to possibly fill it with 100% gear oil, I presume it'll flush itself just fine.

I found a reservoir by the way, that will serve my purposes fine. It's a brake fluid reservoir for a motorcycle. Once I collect all of the little parts I need to go with it, I think I have a cool way to fill the PTU without much fuss.

Of course, what'll really happen is all sorts of f*ckery, probably.

And right now you fill it through the vent tube, correct?

Yes, and I will still be doing that. Instead of the funnel in the video, though, the motorcycle reservoir will serve as the funnel. It's pretty small, and I should be able to set it up on the firewall easily.

Down by the PTU ******, I plan to insert a Y-fitting (per @Michigan-SHO earlier in this thread on page 2), in the vent line, and run a second line back up to the reservoir, where either I'll be tacky and zip-tie it to the little tank, or be clever and put a little fitting towards the upper lip of the reservoir and attach the line to it. Ideally, the line that comes back up vents air fast enough to allow fluid to get down into the PTU.

If that fails, then I'll find an elbow-fitting that will fit the factory fill hole, and run that back up instead. I know this way will work. The first way might work. Either way, I'm going to get it working like an oil change: just drain and fill.

Is this the PTU vent tube cap?

And what is this white thing under the cap, can it be easily removed to fill the PTU from the top?

And what is this under the cap? Looks like a filter but is it removable so that I can fill the ptu

Hey I don’t think we can see your pictures. Seems to be you have to download them to your phone/or computer, and then upload them using the picture icon in the bottom left when you make a post.

What year is your SHO? Is it stock and has it always been stock?

It’s a 2011 bought it used in 2016 with about 80k. I’m not sure what previous owner did with it besides Chip Foose wheels. I did a Livernois tune with new stat and 3bar map. I still don’t know if it is a PP or not but it didn’t have a spare tire and came with the tire inflater thingamagiggy

I believe the previous owner helped you out... that tube should be going down to the vent tube on top of the PTU. If you crawl under, and you indeed have a PP car, you will have a drain plug. At that point, it’s as easy as an oil change, drain and refill with the same amount you drained.

My understanding is the 2010, 2011 and I think the 12 as well never came with a drain plug on the ptu. I just added one a few days ago and I got 14 oz of fluid that drained out. By far the most I’ve ever been able to retrieve.
So, is that the vent tube and can that white part under the cap come out?
