The 91 lost its power steering saturday night.
It all started when I wound out 1st gear and banged into second the previous night. As I released the clutch, I lost my power steering. Depressing the clutch and revving it a little, the steering would snap back in.
Fast Forward to saturday night. Downshifted from 5th to 3rd and hopped on it on the highway and noticed a puff of smoke out back. Thought nothing major of it, something I would check out later. Until I noticed I didn't have any power steering. Never came back.
Examing the fluid, it appeared dark and full enough not to cause problems. The pump is still quiet, but doesn't make any sounds even when turned lock to lock. The rack is less than 10k old, but has fluid all around the input hose from the pump.
I have been told that the pump puts out a constant pressure, regardless of engine speed.
I tried to flush the fluid, but didn't have the means to get the wheels off the ground. I put about 2.5L of fluid through the system until what came out of the return hose was cherry red havoline ATF. Far more fluid went in than out.
Is there a possiblity that their is air in the steering rack? Or does this seem like the pump is smoked?
What would be the first step here? a proper flush with turns from lock to lock?
If it is the pump, what am I looking at to replace it? any tips?
TIA
