Even though the guy i bought the car from said he replaced the rack, i think that is what is wrong with my car. When i have the car running and i turn the wheel it groans. My ? now is could i swap a rack from my 89 into my 91? shrug

I would have told you the other night but if I remember correctly even in our Gen 1's the rack should be SHO specific. It's possible you've got a slo one in yours.

P.S. still havent made up my mind about the motor. Thinkin about just doin the 3.2 now rather then later. My motor is ready to come out with another hour or two wrenchin. Just waiting for the hoist right now. I'll call you later.

The regular SLO rack works fine in the SHO.

The only noticeable difference between them is that the SHO rack includes two small plastic spacers to limit travel. These travel limiters keep the wider tires from rubbing.

The only other *possible* difference would be the turning ratio, but I've never seen any documentation as to whether there is a difference in the internal gearing.

The A1 Cardone 22-214 (non-VAPS) rack for the Gen I SHOs is less than $70 from O'Reilly Auto Parts. The travel spacers are the only differences that I am aware of and they will not cause a groaning noise like you describe. Here is the link to the A1 Cardone site ergarding the importance of flushing the system during a new rack installation.
