So for about the last week I've had a sever power steering fluid leak (1/2quart every 2-3 miles), leaking right on to the cat creating a haze of smoke inside the car. So now that the weekend is here i figure i can get this done. But i'm really not sure where to start. I heard that these hoses melt because they run only a couple of inches above the cat.

So my questions were:
I can see the hose above the cat with fluid dripping. Where does this run to and what is the easiest way of removal
Is there a write up somewhere how to do this (searched here didnt come up with anything).
How long should this take
Are there any special tools needed.
Since the hose melts can anyone recommend a heat shield or heat tape type of product to keep this from happening in the future?

Its a complete pain in the rump to change. IIRC thats the one that goes straight to the rack on the drivers side. Your best bet is going to be to unscrew it from the pump, unscrew it from the rack and replace in reverse order...

As for heat protection, you could use some exhaust wrap?!?
