I removed my plastic engine cover today (wanted to see if it was easy as I had read) and found that sometime between last October when I bought the car and now mice had packed the top of the engine under the cover with leaves. The leaves were now very crispy and I wonder at what point they would have combusted. I checked for chewed wires and found none. The car is garaged at home and work and only sat outside for a couple of days at the cabin in WI last fall. Anybody with a new SHO who lives in mouse country should check under their engine covers. I'm leaving mine off for this reason. Besides it looks better without it (will probably be noisier though) and takes about five pounds off the weight of the car.
