Ok, I want to upgrade my wheels and tires. I don't really care about all-season cuz I got a beater of a jeep when the snow really falls. But at the same time, I can't drop a ton of cash, so I'd like to find a setup that won't break my bank. I've been looking at 16's but I'd like 17's if it really weren't that much more expensive. I think 18's are pushing it. There is another gentleman on the board with a titanium 89' and some really sweet wheels. His picture on his profile definitely captures what I'd like to do. Anyways, I'm basically looking for the best value for SHO wheels and tires.

Wheels are alot easier than tires; just pick the rims you like. However, tires can be more worrysome. Are there any tires that just really don't go well with a SHO, poor performance and all? I'm looking for 225's for the extra proformance. Are there any brands that have been overwhelming popular on the board? Any input would be appreciated. Addam

If added weight of the wheel doesn't bother you and you can deal with the slight loss of acceleration, then check out www.victoriatire.com

For the best deals on tires, it's hard to beat www.tirerack.com ....Just follow the tire decision guide they provide or call them directly. They will be able to give you all the help you need.

If running on the uber narrow slicer or basketweave, the tire you buy is crucial because you need stiff sidewalls and sticky compounds to give you good traction. With wider wheels, it's much less dependent on sidewall stiffness and that's good. As long as you can find a 7.5" or 8" wide wheel, a 235 width will be optimal for you.

This is an older picture of my car.
Rickie, your idea is a good one. However, finding a nice set of GenIII chrome wheels(pictured) for a cheap price can be somewhat tough.

Maddaddam, if you are so poor, why not just replace the tires with a cheap alternative until you can save up the money?
You can find a nice set of 17's and a set of tires for around $1,200 or so. You just need to shop around.
Good luck.

if your gonna upgrade your rims, Id say don't cheap out. Save until you can afford the set that you REALLY want cause it really sets your ride apart from the rest. I LOVE my rims cause no one else has them(that Ive seen) AND, they're discontinued so its all good :) Also, 225 is a good size but if you REALLY want to handle, go with 235/45's. Thats what I have (Kumho ECSTA Supra 712's, $87 a piece from Tirerack.com) and I LOVE them.

Thanks SHODOG. I actually LIKE the way the back sits now, with the MOOG coils. I will drop the front just abit, by dropping the strut in the knuckle trick. Just a little bit :)
I do hate Wheel-gap in the front. :(

RickieFrat:
You can't beat the look of GEN 3 chromies on GEN 1 or 2 SHO. Ask for pics ..... there are alot of peps who have 'em.
A lot of people have this opinion. Unfortunately, I don't. I hate the Gen III wheels and I think they are still too narrow. I would much prefer to lose a .5" of width and stick with slicers. If you want to pick up a Taurus wheel, try the 5 spokes off of the 2000 and up SES Taurus. I'm not sure, but they may have been offered on the '99 SHO. But they are not plain Jane like the Gen III and look somewhat aggressive. Again, only my opinion. shrug
