PIP code 211

okay ... so yesterday my friend was told he needed a DIS module

They got the following codes.
332 EGR not opening .. stupid CA emissions.
542 Fuel Pump circuit ... driver stalls vehicles from time to time.
211 profile Ignition Pick up .

Because of the 211 code, they want to change the DIS module.

Can someone explain to me what this is. The car is idling rough, and loses power periodically. Almost like the car is running on 2-3 cylinders.

The 211 indicates a Profile Ignition Pickup Sensor problem, which is more commonly known as the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS).

I'd suggest doing a search on SHO Forum for "Code 211" topics with responses by Scott (Member #51). Lots of good information from him, as usual.

What does your friend drive? Are you able to swap dis modules with him to be sure that is the failing part? Generally,cps is more prone to failure than dis.

Your friend needs a new mechanic....

The 332 is an EGR problem. Do a search on my username and the 332 to see how to diagnose it. The EGR system is not unique to CA.

The 211 is the CPS as already stated.

Ignore the 542 for now.

The 332 is most likely due to plugged passages in the EGR system. The most common location is the "nostrils" at the split in the intake directly behind the throttle body. You can access these for cleaning by removing the throttle body. There is also an 8mm Allen head plug at the driver side rear of the intake that you can remove to access the horizontal run of this passage. Insert a hose in there and try to blow through it. If no blow, the nostrils are plugged. Also use this hose to help blow the loose crud out of the nostrils during the cleaning process.

Code 211: You need a Wells SU242 crank sensor from AutoZone for $42.99.

Code 542 is generated when the engine stalls. This would accompany the crank failure stall of the engine.

I think I was quoted about 7 hours long ago. Crap like that is why I learned to take care of the car myself. I have done it in 2.5 hours by flashlight in an apartment parking lot. You have to remember that I have been there and done that before.

So it is doable by a reasonably mechanically inclined person. Where would I find instructions on how to do this ... I know that it sits just below the waterpump ... and that you should change it when you do a waterpump/timing belt. But that is all I know.
