Just changed my oil, and checked my air filter while there. I has horrified to find the element(original airbox) was almost black from being oily and dirt sticking to the oil after about 8-12k miles) Knowing that an oil bath air filter hasn't been standard equipment on a Ford since the 50's, I was concerned.
I took the element to my dealer service writer, and after first trying to send me to the parts department where I could buy a new filter, when expressed my concerns about it, he immediately told me it was normal. Didn't ask what kind of car, etc. Just asked if it was using oil, and I said enough to be below the hash on the dipstick after 8000 or so miles. His answer was "we recommend 5000 mile changes on oil, at which point I told him, I let the car tell me when oil life is down to 30-20% and he just repeated his we recommend speech.
Has anyone ever experienced oily air filters? Is it normal on our cars? I've been irritated by oily exhaust tips since I have owned the car, but now I am also concerned since my 140,000 mile 11 explorer doesn't soak the air filter with oil, why is my 29,000 mile SHO doing it?
I guess my biggest pet peeve is the condescending tone in which he told me it was normal...like as if to say, go back to your pushrod 5 liter, cause you are not smart enough to understand Fords today...
