My car had been runnning fine with no codes just checked about a month ago. When I started it up, it was running very rough and the idle rpm was low and surging.
I then saw smoke rising from the hood and saw that oil was getting on the top of the catalytic converter (the one furthest to the right as you are sitting in the driver's seat).
I put the car up on jack stands but didn't see anywhere where the oil was dripping from. I did notice a streak of oil below the crankshaft, wiped it clean, and no coil appeared to be running down this area.
I had to change plugs and wires, so I did that. Then ran KOEO. Codes came back:
81: Inlet Air Solenoid;
18: (memory code) Ignition TACH signal erratic - Ignition System;
45: AIR not Diverting (AIRD) - Air Injection
Electronic Ignition - coil primary circuit failure - Ignition Sytems
I replaced the inlet air solenoid with one I salvaged from a junk yard (the module with the male signal connector bolted to the air bypass valve ?) and it ran smoother.
I'm guessing the coil is shot, perhaps the one for cylinder #5 since that is the cylinder indicated in the cylinder balance test.
It seems everything goes at once with this car!
QUESTIONS:
(1) Is oil "leak" unrelated or perhaps when it was running rough and the coil quit, some oil "burped" through the crankshaft seal.
Note: I replaced all the bottom engine seals about eight months ago and the area under the camshaft seals and crank seals is clean, except the one time as noted above.
I drove it this morning to work; still ran rough; about 10 minutes into ride and five minutes from work (12 miles total) I could start to smell oil "burning"; no smoking from cat converter; popped the hood and couldn't see where any oil was leaking.
Is oil being "thrown" from crankshaft seal, therefore not running downon the "crank area wall" below the crankshaft?
ANY IDEAS ON OIL LEAK?
(2) Is it OK to drive the car, if one cylinder isn't firing because of the defective coil?
(3) Any suggestions on where to get new COIL?
(4) Any suggestions on where to get a new INLET AIR SOLENOID?
???
