like most automatic tranny's, don't do neutral drops!

granted..you might be able to make a scene if you you drop the tranny into drive after bouncing off the 4000RPM park/neutral limiter..but you will destroy your tranny.

don't have the tranny power flushed..i'm not sure on the specifics, but appearantly it can actually do more harm than good..but you STILL need to change the fluid reguarily. try a search for "changing ATX fluid" or something along those lines for the whole scoop. Have the tranny treated to a new filter and fluid as soon as possible.

I think it may be harmful to manually shift the tranny down gears while your coasting..i thought i heard that somewhere, but i'm not sure...best bet is to leave it in drive and let the car shift for itself. Altho, i'm guilty of putting my car in 2nd on downgrades occasionally to take advantage of a little engine breaking...not sure if that's a no-no..but my cars not getting any newer :p

if it ever craps out, look for advice here to get a rebuild...these things can be rebuilt to be pretty stout

This is definatly true. I had an ATX rebuilt for my neighbor and when I was test driving it. Well, , it broke the tires loss on the 1-2 shift @ 5500RPMs. Man was that cool!

Back to the thread topic, just don't abuse it. I have a 93 ATX with 151K on the original ATX. It was service regularly but not driven like a grandma either. I would recommend an additional fluid cooler for them. Heat is a real killer for ATXs.

My 93 ATX was rebuilt by Ford at 28K (yes 28,000) but now has 135K on the tranny and is finally starting to weaken. Changing the fluid/filter is very easy and I recomend doing it every 25-35K. I use Ford fluid everytime, but some here will swear by the synthetic. All is well if it is kept fresh.

The extra cooler is recomended if your gonna drive the car hard. I installed a tranny temp sensor to keep tabs on the temp (looks cool too) and it works well. Also it only takes about 1 hour to install.

As with all SHO's front end and engine work are the best mods to keep it running right!
