Whats up folks...
I am new to the forums and also the sho i just bought a red 93atx for the g\f to drive and it has some issues... i am fairly mechanical minded ive been workin on watercooled dubs forever but the g\f wont drive a stick.... so I bought an automatic that hauls ass...

so heres the deal bought the car with 124k on it and a cracked radiator fixed the radiator and it was good for awhile now the check engine light is on and it bogs down when you bring it to a stop at a light... also after starting the car and driving it for awhile when you shut it off and try to start it again it gives you all sorts of greif before it will start back up...

it has oil on the valve cover and i also believe the pan is leaking too... and from what ive read on here this is common... my question for all those who know more than me... what is the path of least resistance short of a 60k(don't have the money for that right now) to get this car running right again...

gonna try to do a tune up and gaskets this weekend but while ive got it apart for this ordeal what should i look for as far as problems that would make it hard to start back up.... thought it was fuel, then spark, then possibly cats but this car i cant even check for codes like obd cars... looked through the process of checking codes even bought a tool but like i said before this is my first experience with these cars... i wouldn't mind some guidance to help me avoid throwing money at it and not fixing the main issue(the whole not starting thing scares the g\f)

I live in the st pete area so i figured this was the place to go... thank you all in advance for any and all help.

Chris

First off, Welcome!

Second, Pull the codes on the car.

Third, a good start on parts to replace:
O2 sensors
Plugs/wires
ECT sensor
and with 120+ on the clock Rod bearings would be a good choice to change out.

here is the site:
http://shophoenixproject.com/ (it has he procedure to pull the codes as well)

Plenty of good info here too! Just gotta use the search function!
again, Welcome to the forum!

thanx for the quick reply... have searched my ass off and will attempt to pull the codes again tomorrow after work but i have to fix my o\d button first... that was something i didnt even realize was an issue till today... after some reading i found what i needed to do to fix it... stupid wires!!! as far as the rod bearings are concerned are they suspect... like immediate failure with no warning?

the only real warning that you can get is an oil light flickering close to idle.

If the RPMS drop alot, due to some other reason and you get a flickering oil light, thats not a big concern. Considering what rpm it flickers at.

Well you can run an oil pressure gauge and see what oil pressure is at.

EDIT: im talking about the red oil light on the left side of the dash cluster. Not the check oil light(yellow) on the right. :thumb:

whats up guys ... my car wont give me the koer codes... my koeo codes are 111,172,173,212,214,332...i looked em up and when i pulled one of my spark plug boots there was a lake of oil in there...i figure that cant be good... and i am 4 days out for the gaskets i need to fix that... suggestions

i went ahead and reset the ecu but the codes i need some elaboration on
172 & 173 o2 sensors shot or what
212 how would i fix that or is it related to 214 cid error
and then the 332 time for replacement?

also i disconnected the spout connector and the car wouldnt start(atleast i think it was the spout connector) as far as my book told me (the one that came with the code scanner) it had to be disconnected which i tried because following the sho phoenix web page didnt yield me koer codes.. suggestions?

again any help is appreciated also some info on geting to the koer codes would be awesome

welp I use a snap-on scanner at work, for the most part the KOER codes more or less test the metering abilities of the sensors in the car at that given time. If the computer sees a problem it stores it in information and they are called Memory codes, sometimes these are displayed with KOEO codes.... they are the real codes to go after and what sets the light.

I really just scan cars to see why the light is on or to see if they have any transmission sensor problems. I get all the tranny codes in memory or KOEO section so to me, KOER is pretty pointless.... don't sweat it too bad if you can't run it on your car.

well as an update i got more issues than i thought before... crank or front main seal is leaking soif i got to pull it all apart to fix that i might aswell do the full 60k and rod bearings while im there thinking about a general overhaul of the motor.. but that brings more questions is it needed... should i do the rings, rehone the block, ect.... or just do the 60k service and let it go... i plan on spray dont really know what my limits are but saw a guy with 125 shot on a stock block ...

whip you got a helms manual?? does this sound like somethin you might be interested in helping out with... hit me up [email protected]

thanks to all who posted

I would just do the front 60k on it, thow some new RB's in. And check valve lash.

As for the nitrous, the Zex kit is the prefered choice. Very easy to install and very safe. The stock motor will grenade at a 175 shot. However, if you run a 125shot, you will be on the boarder line of other damage, and long term effects. Let alone frying your clutch. IMO, start out with a 50 shot, see how you like it. As it stands, these cars LOVE nitrous. Then if that dosent please you enough, bump it up to a 75 shot. After that, you will need to replace your stock fuel pump with a 155lph pump. Some, however, have gotten away with using a new stock pump on a 75 shot.
If you give the forum a search there is plenty of more info on the subject.
And as for the maintance, check out http://shophoenixproject.com/ really good illistrated write ups on maintanance items.

holy cow this is getting pricey

reached another pinnacle point in my relationship with this car... the parts list for repairs have topped 1g and that doesn't include my labor, fixing the ac, or the steering(which wobbles when the brakes are applied)...

is it worth fixing the car or selling it and finding a mtx(which i would prefer)... hate to sound like a pessimist but i could find another car for the cost of repairs on this one...

Dont get me wrong I love the car but I am a realist and no sooner than me doin all this work to the motor the trans will give out(murphy's law) dont really know if i want to put that kind of money into this car

maybe i just need some reassurance that everything will be ok.. like i said before i come from vw cars which **** i can buy a whole car and make all repairs needed for less than the list i have in front of me

while a bit overwhelming i know i can do the repairs needed on this car... I need some opinions on whether this is worth the hassle

thanks Chris

So far my car has cost me $3500 in repairs. You seem like your car was like mine. We are paying for the poor maint by a previous owner.

My steering was woobling too and it turned out to be a bubble in on of the rear tires. You would only feel it under braking (less load on the tires?)

Good luck on all the stuff. Is it worth it or not? If I had the time and money... Yes. As it stands for me right now.....No.

I may have to trade the SHO in for something more reliable. I promise I will own another.
