Hey guys, I just noticed this section and thought I should post. My name is Vanessa, I own a '92 SHO MTX, which I bought in May. I've already made a thread looking for help. Yes, I am a girl, but I'm trying to learn to work on my own car as much as possible. Please be patient with me, I don't know that much, though I won't ask you to be gentle, as working cars rarely is. This is my first car I ever bought for myself. I'm sure you'll hear from me bunches, since my car is going to need some serious work!

Thanks for all your help!

Welcome to the forum Vanessa. There's a lot of knowledge on this site. Use the search button to try to find answers before posting a new thread. A lot of things that you see for the first time have probably been discussed here before. Got any pics of the car?

I do, it's in a bit of rough shape, but I can't really afford to clean it up. But it runs excellent (other than the transmission). The engine is amazing. I had never even heard of a SHO before, it was just an MTX car that was in my price range to be honest. My dad does car shows, and told me about the history after I bought it. He said the 2010 model wasn't as popular as the Gen I and II.

Oh and I would be curious about the story your dad told you , there's all kinds of stories out there about the so-called history of the sho.

My dad does every major autoshow across the country. He didn't tell me much, just that the 2010 models weren't as popular as Gen I and II. I researched the car myself just after I bought it, and wiki seems to agree. Though I don't see why they'd be unpopular, they really are neat. I also heard the story about how the engines were originally designed for a truck, but they decided to cancel the line and stuck them in Tauruses(sp). What I don't understand is why they started offering the automatic. Wasn't the point of it better served being MTX? I thought it was silly myself.

The engine was never really meant for a truck. HOWEVER, Ford did throw the engine in a ford ranger as kind of a one off deal. The engine is thought to have originally be meant for a Mid-Engine sports car code named the "GN-34". However that never materialized. Recent, we saw pictures of a prototype SHO engine being installed in a 86 Ford Taurus (Back in 86-87), So it may even be the engine was always going to be Taurus specific.

I would also say that it is not that the new SHO is not popular among the Gen 1-II Crowd, many people just don't care for the fact that it is such a large and heavy car with no manual transmission available.

Welcome.

It's always been my understanding that the 3.0 Yamaha was a marine use engine that was originally entended to be used in the '88-'89 Fox platform Mustangs, but Ford almost killed Mustangs in '89, so we got SHOs. This is from a gentleman in one of my car clubs that was a design engineer with Ford from the early 1970s to the mid 1990s.

Yup they can still be used for marine applications(I.E a boat anchor)
Welcome Vanessa. Honestly looks to be a Clean SHO. You dont need a lot of money to clean her up. A can of degreaser for the engine and a few good hours of of some Scrubbin.
The Auto was because it opened a new door for people who didnt want manuals(They sold more)

I didn't have a picture of a close up of the paint, or the leather seats on this computer. It's in rough shape. It's not the cleaning I'm worried about, it's everything else :)

And, Ford got honked off at replacing so many MTX IV diff/trans units under warranty. Welcome , Vanessa, 19sho90 is right, looks like you've got a good solid car, just needs a little TLC.

They are a blast to drive. You will have fun with the car. Just be sure to get all the maintenance done. (front 60k, Valve cover gaskets ect ect.) there are plenty of threads here on what and how to do it.

I do really love the car. It's just a slow process to get everything done on it. I need to replace the clutch for sure, I just can't drop $300 for the kit just this moment. I've been hoping changing the transmission oil will help out. It really could use some paint, and the leather seats are torn apart, but the engine is in amazing shape. Over all, I think I could have it running like new by this time next year. At least I hope so...
