By the by....did you happen to come to Michigan for the big 3000GT/Stealth meet earlier this year? That car looks familiar...

well, i'm from lebanon pa.....zip 17046

Hey, I'm right down the road (422) from you in West Lawn (just outside Reading).

I actually had my cams welded at Manderbach Ford in Temple...probably one of the few dealers willing to undertake that or even willing to acknowledge (my literature from V8SHO.com helped to persuade them). Not sure if they still would...

There's also a dealer in Sunbury that once upon a time was listed on the "Who will weld your cams" list on V8SHO....

yeah, i get a kick out of the TSB ford put out in July 03 talking about how cam failure is rare, and loctite should be used and cam welding is an "inapproapriate and unorthodox repair to a highly uncommon issue" LOL.

Wow, that VR-4 was nice. :thumb:

You will find the SHO to be very reliable but you've got to get the maintenance done on it. Mass. might seem like a drive you won't want to make since you don't like to travel, but you'll thank yourself in the end once those cams get welded.

Could be the torque converter, could be a few things. These trannys are a known weak point over time and usually it's good to get a decent warranty or a stronger rebuild when the time comes. I'm sure you know from your vr-4 the harder you run it, the more you fix it. Car companies aren't in the business of over-engineering their products.

My original-- still running-- tranny has 166K+ miles on it. Other's have had theirs break down before 100k or even been through more than 1.

I can only say I don't beat the snot out of mine, but do some 'spirited' driving now and then.

Don't screw around with the cam weld or the tranny work. Use someone who knows what they are doing the first time. Just because the SAE certified you doens't mean you know how to do everything correctly.. especially the first time.

well , again my guy build trannys and such so i know that part will be good, but i'm not too sure about the cam weld....again i live in pa, and don't want to make any out of state drives to get the cams welded if i can do it here....he also works for a machine shop as well, so i think i'll be ok, i just want to get the week spots fixed first...

still waiting on an update from him, but i don't want to hound him about it...it's no hurry, i got my gl :)

The pump shaft has been know to break.

Pull the tranny cooler line off and start the car. See if there is any fluid coming out. If there is the pump is still working.
My last tranny quit pumping for some reason.

Search around for tranny upgrades for the rebuild. It should be archived here somewhere. Will make it more stout and more reliable. A little fluid starved appears to be a common opinion and there are hole drilled to accomodate this. You can get a better torque converter and get it brazed to help. An aftermarket shift kit is cheap and gives firmer and better shifts.
