So... I wanted LED tails but...
1. I didn't want any of the crappy 1 inch autozone direct replacement bulbs (too damn small for such a large lens)
2. couldn't swing the cash at the custom tails made by someone here(kzoosho? i think?) due to the fact that i just dropped $650 on tires for my truck.

so, while on a recent road trip I was at a truck stop and saw some badass LED fixtures for a 18 wheeler trailer (4 inch arrays) and said "i can stuff those in my tails!"
last weekend i went to the boneyard and found a donor SLO for my little project, heres the result...

before surgery...
Beforejpg

after surgery , note: the abundance of JB Kwik to seal the wound:naughty: (sorry, i forgot to take a pic of the fixture b4 the implants went in:bonk: )
Afterjpg

playing with spaghetti:nut:
Wiringjpg

plugged in with the pigtails purchased with the lights. note: the little white "boxes" are the load equalizers needed to keep the "lamp out" id10t light from comming on :thumb:
EDIT** Load equalizers are gone (they like to melt things around them)
Grote flasher installed and I unplugged the lamp out module.

You know I had this idea a long time ago. The jeep crowd does the entire conversion over to the round led tails. I will be doing it to my jeep very soon and contemplated doing something similar. What I would like to do is cut the outer lens, install those, and some reverse lights in a similar pattern as stock with the new lights flush. Doing this would look similar to your design, but would make the leds more visible. I didn't know how well it would look so I never did it... I probably would have used one of the oval lights as to not make the backend look skyline-ish on my first gen, but yours look great!!!

BTW, where do you get these guys^? Can they be found at the truck stop/travel stores as well? And what are the specs of them?

I'm thinking about doin'm but utilizing the pill shaped LED lights. I'm not sure how I'll organize them yet though. I was thinking something like \\ // or just \ / (picture lines as pill shape) but more horizontal so it will looked p'ed off.

You want to get rid of those load equalizers, those are junk and will heat up very quickly. I got a new electric blinker unit from Grote to fix the fast blink problem.

Ian (ManySHOs) made the first set a while ago and he helped me make mine. Both Ian and I have a writeup on here with pics, although I think most of my pics are dead now.

But those equalizers have ceramic housings. I highly doubt they will get hot enough to cause damage considering how well ceramic absorbs heat.

You just have to make sure that they have enough airspace, they do indeed get pretty hot so inside the trunk under the carpet would probably be a problem. I have mine outside the trunk in the space behind the tails (which leaves the space under the bumper open and airy:thumb:

I got mine at a local TA travel center, but they are available at most truck stops, some have truck stops have better selections than others though:thumb:

They work yes, but is a bandaid solution. One of the advantage of LEDs is that they use less current, but the car's computer thinks that you have a lamp out because it uses so much less. These load resistors just takes that amount of current and turns them into heat tricking the computer into thinking you have regular incandesent (sp?) bulbs in.

This is what I have, cost $8-12 so it's similar to those resistors, why not do it properly?

It also makes the wiring a lot cleaner, without those resistors.

:oogle: Well, Don't I feel like a dope:bonk: I am definitely going to get one. but wouldn't I still need the load equalizers for the tails? I had originally wired them like the instructions on the equalizers said (only to the brake/signal circuit) and that fixed the fast flash problem and the LAMP OUT light problem with the brake/signals, but it still came on any time the taillights were on until I added equalizers to the taillight circuit also:type: where do i get one of those LED flashers?

  :lol:sad thing is, with all the crap that WAS on the back of my car (now gone with the exception of the tuning forks that I left after removing "YAMAHA") at least there was total "truth in advertising" unlike a police interrupter:biggrin: badge
