Hey guys. I'm looking to do some weird custom things and just needing to verify part numbers on a few items.

1. What is the 1st gen mtx code? (i.e C3, C4, T5, T45 etc)

2. What other vehicles used that same transmission. (iirc the 3rd gen mtx proteges did as well some escorts)

3. Does anyone have the gear ratio chart for a first gen?

4. Can Doug Lewis at FPS do diff welding?

thanks in advance.

1. MTX IV
2. 1st and 2nd GEN SHO's
3. Check www.shotimes.com all ratios listed there.
4. Welding a diff is not a good idea on a RWD never mind a FWD car.

What he said...

On the last point, the case is aluminum. If you're looking to do some repairs or modification on the case be sure to find someone who knows what they're doing with aluminum.

The webmaster here is an MTX-IV expert, btw.

my main question was about the vehicle interchange on this particular manual. When I had my centerforce clutch installed the transmission guy swore that the SHO manual was identical to several other ford/mazda transmission. I was hoping to swap trannys to a vehicle with different gear ratios to affect either acceleration or topend without requiring anything more than swapping units out.

I'll do some more homework and get back when I find out the results.

What Marcel posted was correct that the only place this transmission has been used is on GenI and GenII SHOs. The bolt pattern, however, is common with transmissions that bolted to, I think, the Vulcan V6 on which the SHO block was originally based. (Vulcan might not be quite right, but it was a common Ford V6 block.) Other apps for those V6s included Windstars and some Rangers.

I've thought it significant that not too many people go running out to find Windstar or Ranger trannys to bolt up to these things. Most of the transplants that I've seen have used adapter plates (like a Kennedy adapter) to bolt the motor to whatever tranny has been selected for the task.

If you're referring to the MTX differential, I have welded mine and anothers, while mine has 15k-20k on it and no problems. Burnt out many times!

Nothing wrong with welding it, if you know how and where to do it! ;)

In addition to the SHO, the MTX-IV was also used in a limited number of 1992-1994 Tempo GLS and Topaz XR5/LTS cars in the early 90's, but the ratios were different. The MTX-IV was based on the MTX-III used in 1982-1994 Tempos and Topazes.

If you search the forum, the gear ratios, etc. have been posted previously.

thanks guys. I was told specifically by several (supposedly informed) people that the 3rd gen protege mtx was the same as the SHO's. Its geared very aggressively and I thought swapping the two trannys would make for some interesting driveability changes in the two cars.

I compared rebuild kits for the MTX-IV and no other has the same rebuild kit. I went by if the parts are different, then the transmissions are different.
