Does anyone know how to get the map data updated? And are we entitled to free updates for at least the first 12 months?

My new SHO that I will pick up later this week has our home in a corn field. Our street was built in 2003.

This in my opinion is ridiculous for a 1700 dollar option.

Do I have any options

Unfortunately, this is the case for a lot of people in new developments. The map data comes from one of three or four cartographers. If they don't have updated data to give out, you're SOL.

The same thing happened to my boss. His subdivision in PA isn't on any map or GPS, and he's been there for something like 10 years now.

that's one reason I decided against getting the nav, although it would have been nice to have HD radio. . .

I'd say get a portable nav unit. . .

Portable or not its going to have the same map data. You need to pay to upgrade it too, portable or integrated.

yeah but you can buy a portable one for $100. its probably ridiculous that your house is in a corn field, but at least you don't need a nav unit to get home (i'm hoping), so hopefully most everywhere else is on there

If you check in your owner's manual, you should find and address/website to obtain updates. I haven't seen the new Taurus OM, but earlier Ford vehicles, I retired from the local Ford dealer in 2007, had that information listed there. If it isn't, the local dealer's service department should have that info available. However, the problem could still be there because the information simply hasn't been updated. Most of the navigation systems depend on info from 3rd party providers and often don't update the programing until major changes are determined. This often leaves the local road changes on the back burner.:salute:

I guess you arent a tech savvy person like I am but I feel the nav is worth every penny. I dont even use the navigation that much, just the screen and other features make it worth it. At the end of the day, your $100 portable navigation is still a $100 portable navigation with a suction cup.

Push the "i" information button on the button panel. This will give you all the map data and the toll free numbers to call.

a lot of people don't know how to do this properly

most systems these days are based on a few companies for mapping

most of the better GPS companies deal with Navteq for their mapping and directions and luckily ours are based on navteq

go to navteq.com/store and select your vehicle

the only problem with is that updates are expensive its recommended you only update every 3 years

if you guys live in an area for 10 years and no map data is available

call your local government and tell them to notify the GPS companies to update

as for cheap GPS's i had a TomTom that wanted me to get lost somewhere in montreal i used my RX-8's built in unit and it brought me to valet parking to the hotel while the TomTom wanted me 8km elsewhere in the city

Not that it's the greatest thing or anything but Mapquest Mobile for Iphone is pretty decent if you like voiced directions and it is free. Or just the google map app.

I like the nav on the SHO it is "pretty" and easy to follow. That said it once sent me in circles on a local road. Yes circles.:woo-hoo:

ACTUALLY in semi-related news...anyone know if there is a way to set the NAV system up so that say, it gives me traffic alerts for my drive to/from work without actually "navigating" me on the route that I take? It looks like with travellink it could alert you to conditions on your route but I dont need turn by turn during that drive. Yes I know the turn by turn voice can simply be muted but I am wondering if there's a way to just have it track your progress on a set route without telling/showing you where to turn next. If that makes sense.

My sense is thaat if there isn't a route programmed in then there's no way the system can predict where you are going and whether traffic incidents on the road might affect you. Just my .02.

More Issues

Not only will I agree that the nav data is obselete. I tried searching for a car dealership using the POI option well come to find out that Ford only lists their dealerships ie Ford, Madza, Lincoln and Mercury and no one else. I know one of the satellite radio station are mislabelled.
