Ok this weekend i just went out and bought a component system (mb quart 6 1/2 for the front) And i was wanting to mount the tweeters on that little pannel on the door. I would like to flush mount the guy. But there really isn't any space back there for him. I was woundering if any body has any pics of the tweeters mounted up there. And if they had to do any thing special to get them up in there.

Thanks

I was thinking of going J-yard hopping next summer to find some of the little "mach" grates from the Gen3 Taurus but not sure who I would mount them. Course I have little reason now sold my MBquart setup to pay for repairs to the SHO ;/

well were i want to put them there isn't enought of room to put them. You pull the plastic back. and boom there is metal right there. I want to flush mount them. i can't stand tweeters that are just like either velcorded (if thats how u spell it) or just like screwed some were. And they are like sticking a few inches out. I just think that looks tacky or just plan billy!!!! So if any body could i would like to see some pics....

I was going to do it that style but because my tweeters were not part of a component system, it would of beebn to hard to run the extra wire. I oppted to put them at the top of the pillar. I like it. I think that there is enough room behind the pillar to ount the tweeter, or you may have to drill into the frame. Heres what mine looks like:

Here are the tweeters I put in my old 89. I went junkyarding and moulded the plastic at the base of the A-Pillar to hold the tweeter, and they pointed right at the center of the car. I used testors paint can tops as the "mount" and I glued and shaped the plastic to make it look smooth. A coat of black and they looked factory. I'll probably do that on my 95 some day.

The thing that sucks is that no matter where you mount the tweeters, they are gonna look hidious, unless of course you flush mount them, how about on the dash it self?, or even behind the door handle, or even underneath the handle on the lump that you hold to close the door, dunno how to differentiate the two. My guess would be to take it to a stereo shop and see what they, think but act like you want them to do it, wow i know customers... :D

Look, if you're not going to install kick panels and you care about your imaging, you have but 1 option.

Put them in the door, below the woofer area, at the forwardmost part of the door, with a swivel mount aiming back towards you. If done cleanly, it will look good, especially since they will be out of your sightline. That will give you better imaging than any other location, except for kicks.

If I remember right, you can just cut into the door. That metal peice is just there, and not part of anything incredibly important. I haev mine flush mounted in the sail panel there, and I know that cutting was done. SO yes it can be done, and it does look sweet

I bought the Q-forms kick panels for my 5.25" diamond audio component set. The color match isn't PERFECT, but's decent. The imaging is great, but I'm just waiting for someone to put their foot through it. I'll post pics ASAP.

Maybe you can try flush-mounting them in the speaker grill covers in the dash. I dont know if that will affect the auto-light sensor or not. Personally, i just have 6 1/2" three ways in the doors (woofer, midrange, and tweeter).

there are several areas that would work good for mounting tweeters in the SHO. I think that the best areas(excluding kick panel pods for the mids and tweets) would be in either the sail panel, or the front windsheild pillar in front of it. remember...when it comes to component sets, you want to keep the woofer and tweeter as close together as possible. for this reason i do not recomend installing them on the ceiling, like the pictures posted earlier. any way you cut it though, there is going to be some custom work involved with getting them in and looking good. if you aren't up to it, or don't want to pay for it, go for the q-forms...best SQ, easiest solution. no cutting, drilling, bondoing, painting or anything. the worst of it would be relocating the speaker wires to the kick.

I had a Super Coupe prior to owning a SHO and in both cars putting the tweeters in the sail panels resulted in a definite bias to one side or the other. The resultant distance from said left tweeter was just too close to my left ear to be attenuated, at least at that time, with any known processor. Fast forward to present day, there are processors out that can allow this to work but not optimally. Even with a PXA-H900 or for the layman in the crowd, Alpine's F#1 Status Multimedia Manager. Yes, I know you can turn down or alter the balance but it just didn't sound right, my opinion.

True, you should keep the tweeter and the midrange as close to one another as possible. The midbass/woofer location isn't critical since mono is not directional. If kicks are not possible the door mounting is better than sail panel. Yes, flush mounting a tweet in the sail looks really good however it really messes up/draws your imaging. The inside of the A pillar is okay for attenuated secondary tweeters. The whole idea of kick panel mounting is to equalize the distance from speaker to your sweet zone or ears. It can be done on both the mtx and the atx sho and it sounds incredible. With or without the $4000 processor. Once again, my opinion.

As a side note, being an "older guy" doesn't mean I know everything about stereos. Vehicles of mine have in the past (1983 to 1987) and (1993 to last year) competed in sound competitions and I have seen my fair share of extremely high end equipment out there. I only speak of my experiences, with my equipment in my SHO.

The area those tweeters are installed would sound very crisp for MB quartz(very very loud tweeters) and being as though u would be sitting very close to the driver side tweeter it would really mess up imaging (would sound good but one would be ALOT louder than the other). When doing my install I found the best place to mount the tweeters is below the midrange driver(i.e. right below the rectangle panel about an inch or so). This will enable u to point to tweeters so they won't be overpowering and be farther apart so it will not be a loud tweeter, they will both sound very dynamic.

Also, MB Quarts are made so u can off position them(I.E. you don't have to point them at ur ear to make them clear) They are very brite if pointed right at you.

I surface mounted mine on the panels behind the mirrors.

Since you wnat a flush mount, your only option is to cut the door with a hole saw directly behind it.

Shouldn't affect the door or mirror mount in any way.

What about behind the AC vents in the dash? Make a little bracket to hold them in the duct behind the vent adjuster.

In my 95 MTX, what I did was pull back the weather stripping coming up the front of the door opening area, and mounted them on the front corners of the dash, closest to the windshield. I used double sided tape, and the exterior mounts. IMO, they sounded sweet, and I was using the stock amps! FYI, I also used 4X6 speakers (kicker component system), which worked sweet! Good luck on the install, I would highly recommend the dash mount, because if done right, they look nice, and if you ever decide to sell, remove the sticky tape, and you're done, no drilling required!
Good Luck!
Kevin
