D'oh! Turns out the ticket I got back in October put me at 6 points (Unsure how given that it was 10 over and the last ticket I received in Michigan was for 15 over back in 07). Last week my parents got a letter from the State of Michigan saying I need to ante up a "Driver Responsibility Fee" of $150 "within 30 days" or else...

So I just walked into the local Georgia DMV office, forked over my Michigan license, and within 45 minutes walked out with my new Georgia license.

Can Michigan still get this money from me now or can I tell them to go 'eff themselves? Politely, of course.

NYS has been doing this since 2006 or so.

And since you swapped licenses while you were in good standing, you're pretty much good to go, although you may be suspended in Michigan personally, versus just your license nr.

Bear in mind that while I'm saying all of this, IANAL.

I don't believe that Georgia and Michigan are reciprocating states like OH & IL would be so in that department I think you'd be ok. However, MI will know that you surrendered your MI license when they send the old one in, thus they will know where you are and also have your new GA license number. More than likely it won't matter since all they were going to do if you didn't pay the fee was suspend your license. What plates do you have on your car? MI or GA? That could also make a difference.

Having said that, I would be very mindful of Michigan laws next time you're here. I'm not for certain, but it might come back on you if you get stopped here.

Back in Michigan ... again.
Pay it.

My brother blew off a speeding ticket he got in PA way back in the late 1980's when he had an Ohio driver's license (Michigan license was suspended... he was a reckless youth LOL).

5 years ago (as in 2003) he went to renew his Michigan chauffer's license (record nice and clean now, Ohio license LONG since expired) and there was a hold on his renewal regarding an unpaid ticket on his non-existent Ohio license. He told Michigan he had no Ohio license. They said Ohio has the hold, he would need to talk to them.

He contacted the Ohio DMV, who was able to confirm there was a hold on his non-existent Ohio license for an unpaid ticket from PA. Given the time involved he suspected PA didn't have it on their books, he called them and they had absolutely no record of the ticket and had no warrants, fines, or anything for him. As far as PA was concerned, my brother didn't exist.

Ohio insisted he needed to pay the fine. He told them he contacted PA and there was no fine to pay.

Ohio insisted he needed a signed, certified and notarized document from PA stating no such fine existed.

My parents had been planning a trip to PA anyway to visit relatives, so my brother made all the necessary arrangements via phone, my father picked up the paperwork in PA and delivered it in Ohio for him. Once they had the documents, Ohio then REINSTATED his Ohio license (because it didn't exist)and cancelled the hold. He then contacted Michigan who confirmed the hold was gone, allowing him to renew his chauffer's license. He then had to re-cancel his Ohio license.

Overall he wasn't out additional cash related to the fine, but there were a few fees for notarized paperwork, long distance calls, etc, and I think there was a nominal fee associated with the reinstatement of the Ohio license. Now, if he'd had to go to PA personally, then he would've had travel expenses and lost work time, which would've been WAY more than the fine.

How or why this all surfaced 20 years after the fact, with my brother renewing his license numerous times in those years, remains a mystery to this day.

Moral of the story: Stuff like this can come back and bite you when you least expect it. And in your case Denny you still have family and obligations in MI, so I'd DEFINITELY not let anything slide here.

Yeah, the fee is ******** but hey, you've got a lead foot :finger:

A wise man once said (as he was pulling his busted SHO into the garage), "you play you pay."

Wait, I just reread that.... it's only $150? :oogle:

In NY, 6 points earns you a $100 annual "fee" for the next 3 years. Every point over 6 will cost you an additional $25 every year. $150 ain't so bad in the grand scheme of things.

it's worth 150 bucks to avoid any problems in the future.....call it stupid tax and move on.

Fine...

It is annual by the sounds of it. And there is an additional charge for every point as well. Talk about getting punished not twice, but thrice for speeding. First the local county, then the Department of Treasurary for the responsibility fee, and then insurance...

You play you pay

Yeah, hence the exasperated, "fine" :frown:

Sucks though, that $150 would easily cover plate, *damnit* emission testing, and a chuck of my lower insurance rates. MCAA can suck it (apparently the State is in the insurance business as well)!

And yeah, turns out I should pay, Michigan still has two titles with my name that they could withhold if they felt. :bonk:

doesn't Ford have some sort of legal team that it's employees can get advice from? or is that just for the UAW guys?
I would do a little research, I can see it screwing up a license for sure, but a title is more or less just proof of ownership.

Prepaid legal services deducted with before tax dollars. I elected not to take said benefit and instead take home a little extra cash every month. Based on what I read, it wasn't that comprehensive anyway...

Reminds me when I was on my way home after buying the 95ATX(ok it was a week later) and I didn't yet have insurance.

A. Car stalls at a light and I'm rear ended, totalling the car. ($1500)
B. No proof of insurance fine. ($~125)
C. Driver Responibility Fee (two $400 yearly payments)

So that's what...a $2400 Crank Sensor?
