Ok, not really marbles in my engine. When I take off I can her what sounds like marbles bouncing around under the hood. I only hear at low rpms on take off, thats it.

Im worried its something to with the tranny, but I hope not.

The alternator was over spun, and it makes a funny noise. Haven't been under the hood to see if thats it yet.

Any ideas?

bad timing belt tensioner?

I am thinking your are right on the money. It has been spitting a bit, not missing and throw codes yet, but I bet that is around the corner.

Do you have the diesel option? that would give you a marble sound.:naughty:

what diesil option?!

If its a manual, then my bet is on the throw out bearing going bad.

Dont think so, you only hear it in first on a slow take off.

The marbles rolling around in a tin can sound can also be pinging.

just went over the engine recently checking for knocks, pings and stuff. Didnt come up with anything. Did that because the heat shield was loose and I thought it was an engine knock.

Does it only do it when the engine is under load?

-Sam

Yes, on take off in first gear, and only when I take off slow, like from my drive way.

Bearing?

Maybe a bad idler pulley or accessory pulley bearing? They can sound gnarly sometimes, and stop making noise @ higher rpm...

When my timing belt tensioner went, it would do it the worst on the 3-2 downshift. I had it set at 28mph (this is an ATX, mind you), and when it went it would kick the rpms up to about 1900 RPM and it would get really loud. If I hit the throttle, as soon as the engine hit 2k rpm it would just magically disappear. It just... turned off. And below 1500 rpm it wouldn't make any noise either. If that sounds kinda like what you're going through, my money's on the tensioner.

low rpms - got it

Under load - got it

First gear only?

If yes to the last, it may be NORMAL transaxle noise.

IMO, definately not normal. Low hammering sound immediately after startup, and in the background. Sounds like the noise I'm trying to identify in my car. With a stethescope, sounds like #1 cyl in the source, and I suspect rod bearings.

If I get time over the weekend, I'm going to look for a lapel sized microphone that I can mount inside my stechescope, record, then post.

But at the moment, my '94 failed PA emissions test yesterday, with a EGR/DPFE/EVR related code 332 that I need to track down and eliminate.

well, thanks for the input guys, I am having the rob bearing done either way in the next week or so, however long it takes the parts to get here.

Also going to order a new timing belt tensioner. New alt as well, I know that thing is over spun a bit and just flipping out sometimes.

I will report back when this is all done. Might even have the shosource catback by that time :D

With the car running, pull spark plug wires one at a time. Listen for the noise.

guessing that will force the piston up and down without any help from combustion and make it so you can any problems a lot louder.
