I noticed recently in trying to diagnose a problem with a misfire (turned out to be a bad ground, thats all) that when mt MAF is unplugged, my transmission shifts A LOT smoother. No shudder at certain speeds going from 1st to 2nd. I don't get a CE light or any stored codes when its plugged in, other than telling me that it was unplugged at one point. I did reset the codes to make sure the low voltage from MAF code was only from unplugging it and not from when it was connected, too.

Is there any way a MAF can be tested with a voltmeter. Alldata DIY gives a voltage chart, but its relative to mph, and I obviously can't be under the hood while the car is moving.

Is this a normal thing, because if so, I can see this being a factor in why our transmissions die. All Tauruses i've been in do the same thing (shuddering shift), but otherwise drive fine.

BTW. Its a 1993 ATX. I know the transmission is perfect, because the fluid is good, and the shuddering only happens a certain speeds. if I accelerate to the point where it'll go 1-2 at around 3300~ and 5500~, no problems at all, but anywhere else, its a different story.

Perhaps the easiest thing would be to try a different MAF sensor and see if that helps. What about the VSS on the ATX tranny...I'm not that familiar with the ATX that much, but perhaps the VSS could be having issues. (?)

Edit: I have a spare MAF sensor if you'd want to try it.
