My clutch went out and I don't know which clutch kit to pickup. I am looking at these clutches
  • Southbend TZ
  • Southbend DXD
  • SHOnut HD PP, 9 puck fibertuff with a ceramic TOB
  • Midwest SHO's 8 puck kevlar kit
A setup that was recommended to me was to go with a stock disk, the HD PP, and a ceramic TOB. The car is driven hard and I need something that will take a lot of abuse. I am going to have a decent amount of hp with the mods in my sig. What would you recommend for this application and what have you used? Thanks

I have the DXD and I love it! after a few thousand was put on it, a little bit of clutch chatter aorse but I figured it would. I'd stick with the DXD out of all of those. Just my opinion, but that is what you asked for. I do get a little chatter on occasion but it grips wonderfully! I know a few people(probably a lot) that would hate it in traffic but I like it... It grips and gets even better once it's hot! Sb has great customer service and their product is great IMHO. Just my $.02.

I have the 9-puck fibertuff disc in my SHO.
Positives: Grabs, grabs, grabs... yeah, it grabs anytime you need it. :D From what I heard, it's got a decent usage life to it. (We'll see how she like to grab while being nitrous fed :) )

Negatives: Chatters at idle with the clutch pedal out due to an all metal spline on the disc. (not that big a deal to me anymore, it's just a noise)
Can chatter sometimes due to the aggressive nature of the clutch. So, stop and go running with this clutch can be a pain sometimes.

All in all I would definitely recommend this clutch, especially for an agressively driven car with some mods. Combined with a HD PP,ceramic TOB, and tephlon impregnated release arm bushings, it's a killer combo. :)

TMine chatters at idle too. I have the same noise I bet. It goes away when I push the clutch in though. Does it on yours too?

Yup. I spoke (actually emailed back and forth :) ) to Josh about the noise it was making, and found out it was due to an all metal spline in the clutch disc. With just a little play of the disc on the input shaft splines it just makes some noise.

Edit: He also confirmed that it was making the same noise with a car he just installed a 9-puck in. So they all make the noise.

9-puck Fibertuff

So far so good.............I've got about 1k miles and 1 track day on my fibertuff 9-puck its been a perfect marriage to my 8lb shoshop flywheel. :thumb:

Soon it will get an addtional 3k miles and several laps around Thunder Hill.

Maybe mine does chatter or rattle at idle, I recently noticed a chatter or rattle when it is at idle. So if I push in the clutch this "rattle" should stop?

I thought it sounded like a rod bearing but I had changed those 4k miles ago.

Factory or aftermarket flywheel?

I am probably going to get a 9 puck fibertuff clutch with the heavy duty pressure plate and I was wondering if I really should get a light weight flywheel. Does it really make that big of a difference over a stock flywheel?

Yoor car will rev a lot faster and it will gain you some power. It's up to you if you want to get one or not though...

Yes the rattle WILL go away when you press the clutch in.

I went for the 8lb SHOshop flywheel because I use my car on a limited basis mostly setup for Open Track events and to embaress the BMW's that drive around my area.

IMO: The 18lb SHOshop steel flywheel would be a better choice for a daily driven SHO.

I think I'm going to see if there is someone in Duluth that can lighten my stock one, I seen someone on here who got theirs down to 17lbs from lightening and resurfacing.

I did the same thing about a week after Kenny did and got mine down to about 18.25lbs IIRC. I love mine! It revs a bit quicker and I like the way it feels better than the stock one.

You can actually notice a difference with it 2.75 lbs lighter??

Actually, for some reason, in it's stock form it weighed close to 24 lbs... It's the heaviest SHO flywheel I've ever seen! I weighed it before and after with a very accurate scale I have. I originally bought it to weigh my power tanks(the portable air tanks) that I have to fill my Tires after I air down while 4-wheeling... A certain weight tells me how much air is in it and it is very accurate. I have never seen a stock flywheel that heavey and From what I have read the stock flywheel should weigh around 21lbs...
