Continuing with the 60k service on my car and have found that the valve worksheet is calculating that I need extremely large shims. Is this unusual? I have a few that run in the range of 2700 all the way up to 2775. Just want to see if this possible or maybe I am doing something wrong in the gap measurement. I did double and triple check these measurements and kept getting the same thing.

Regarding the question as to whether you are doing it right, the answer is in the final "Gap - As Left" measurement. If the gap is in the designed range, the shim is the right one. I have a small number of the thicker shims, but the .05mm sizes were purchased through a Yamaha supplier since all the Motorcraft part numbers are obsolete.

Size (mm), Yamaha P/N, Number On Hand
2.700, K&L 13-7649, 4
2.725, N/A, 1
2.750, K&L 13-7650, 5
2.775, N/A, 1

I have a few 2750's in my motor, however, I have new valves, seats, and cams.

Hey Scott,

Thanks for the info. I guess I won't have the answer until I am able to replace them with the estimated shim. But for the ones that were calculating to be a larger shim and I had on hand (2600 & 2650), the final gap measurement was within spec. So I guess i am doing something right.

Maybe I misread what you wrote but are you saying you have some of these larger sizes for sale? :) If not I figured I could go down to the Yamaha dealership near my house and see what they have. I guessing these are something they would probably have to order?

Thanks!

Thanks Jason! My engine compartment looks NOTHING like yours :dribble: and the car completly stock. Matt from ShoBros (were I rented the kit) wondered if I had different cams in there but I don't. Is it possible that not have doing this procedure at 60k have caused this huge gap?

You're not doing anything wrong. I just did my adjustment, and I could have used some 2600 and 2700 sizes to bring things to the tight end of the spec (or even nominal in one case). ****, one of the stock shims was a 2625.

When Matt and I went to a Yamaha dealership to pick up some shims, they just handed us a box full of shims and told us pick out the ones we needed. I do admit that I like the puzzled look on their face when we told them they were for a 3.0 liter Yamaha V6.

But they do work correct? I was thinking about doing this because I heard elsewhere they were the same. How much did they charge you out of curiosity?

They are in my engine now. I paid $5 ea. for the shims I needed plus I bought some extra for our shim kits.
