ok guys i got my codes... i was hoping it would be a sensor, but then again i hear the VSS is a b to change...

so i'll just post all the codes:
172 rear/rh hego sensor indicates lean
176 front/lh hego sensor indicates lean
336 exhaust back pressure high/PFE (*?) circuit voltage high
452 issuficient input from VSS / malfunctioning
543 fuel pump secondard circuit failure (*?)

411 idle too high (i had the car at the normal temp lower line at the first test. i checked again and that code did not pop up)
632 tranny control switch not cycled (i belive my OD button is not hooked up presently...but OD is on) this code is for the Over Drive switch right (*?)

9 all cylinders ok for ballance test

so i have the new sensor, im looking for the easiest way for the driveway mechanic to change it out.

please add input for spots marked (*?)

Looks like you need O2 sensors to start...after I replaced mine...it also got rid of the 336 code.
Not sure on the fuel pump code
The 632....when doing the self test it wants you to hit the O/D button on and off. If you did that, then it likely may not be hooked up like you said. But the question I would have to that is Why isn't it?

Let me know how you make out with your findings on the VSS...if you do it yourself please let me know how you did it.

ok thnx guys.

the OD swith has been unplugged for a while i guess, i dont think that it ever bothered the last owners beacuse it was unplugged in the on possition...OD works.

the tranny was replaced in 99 at a ford dealer...maybe they didnt hook it up right. they prolly put the original vss into the new tranny too...

and yeah i nkow about the o2 sensors...i thought they might be alright...i havent had the engine light on at highway speeds in a while...but i suspected i would see something again.

i called my mechanic. i got under the car earlier and i cant even see the thing, so i cant even go further than that. i dont have the tools or a shop to go to to drop my exhaust y pipe to look more. i am going to be poping my intake off again though, so i will see if i can see more of it then. i think that im tracing a speedo cable down to it, but it goes further than i can go/see...

Its visible through the passenger wheelwell, but cant be replaced through there, you may after an hour tugging remove the heat sheild that covers it that way. As far as I know dropping the Y pipe is the only way other than pulling the tranny or motor, theres more than the intake blocking access from the top. I unfortunately have had to drop the cash and have mine replaced twice. The mechanics hated me and my car when they finished it but they got it done. Their books calls for it to be a 3 hour job and in my case it cost 151.00 (I provided the new sensor)with tax to pass that headache on to someone else. BTW the mechanics said even with all their torches, lifts, and gadgets it still took 4 hours and alot of scraped knuckles and cussing...they also said in the future to take my buisiness elsewhere.
Good Luck either way

As I understand, Yamaha was asked to design the motor without knowing what it was going to be installed in, also adding an automatic transmission was an afterthought for the second generations. Not only did they add the auto but to further appeal to the kind of buyers who wanted automatic they softened the ride (stock MTX's are more rigid feeling and handle the curves with alot less "float". My theory on why the sensors seem to fail so often, especially on the ATX's is the intense heat generated in the engine bay and very little room for air to flow and cool the motor/electronics. That little oval around the f'in Ford emblem doesnt seem very generous. Besides being a mother to get to look where the VSS is located... above the y pipe, behind the motor and in the tranny, there really couldnt be a better place that provides intense heat and practicly no airflow. Whats amazing is that they last as long as they do. There is considerably more space in the MTX engine bay and they seem to have far less sensor related driveability issues. Also I've never had a sensor fail anytime but in the summer months on my ATX. That being said make sure the heat sheild is replaced along with the new VSS...for obvious reasons. Alot of mechanics will "overlook that spare part" and added frustration resulting in premature failure.
