Ok, so my 93 SHO has grey interior that is in pretty good condition. The major flaws (to me at least) are that the door panels have a bit of discoloration on them, mostly up towards where the mirrors are. Cleaning them did no good, so I opted to paint them with spray interior paint/dye. Well it did the trick, but in itself has presented some new problems for me..

1) The paint is very easy to chip off, and doesn't seem to be durable at all. I'd MUCH rather not use paint if I can, but nothing else would fix the discoloration.

2) The paint color is about 1-2 shades lighter than what my stock pieces are. Not terribly noticable, but enough to bug me a ton.

I want to fix this, and make this car as pristine as possible, so something has to be done. The rear door panels were in good shape to begin with, but I painted them anyway (was planning on doing everything in the car). Is there a way I can safely remove the paint from the panel? Would it discolor the original grey that is underneith the paint?

I may just have to scour the junkyard for new front door panels. Not a problem though, as I'm heading out there bright and early tomorrow morning :nut:

Edit -

This is the brand I used, and the color was that grey can on the left. I even took the cap out to my car to see if it'd be the same color, and it was a lot closer. Came out a bit lighter with a hint of tan in it

Don't mistake those paint cans for a dye. Get a real automotive interior dye and you'll never have that problem as it will turn the color of the actual item the color you see instead of just coating it.

Time for a black interior swap??

Well when I first sprayed a piece and noticed the shade was a bit off, I decided I kind of liked it. I figured it was close enough to the stock color that it'd hold up well and look better. After I sprayed my door panels (havent touched the drivers door yet), among a few other things.... I realized I was putting in the same amount of effort that I would have been doing to convert it to black interior. So now my interior sits semi gray and semi light grayish-tanish.

I want to do black sometime in the future, but right now I'm gonna keep it grey. Already have brand new gray carpet that is a few shades darker than stock, as well as a 4x6 of extra carpet in that shade that will be used to re-carpet the door panels and center console to match.

Edit - alright me = fail. I actually used DUPLICOLOR Vinyl / Fabric Dye! Haha the Krylon was primer. It was this grey one

I used the vinyl and fabric stuff too when I did my '92 into a black interior. I used it on the dash and rear deck (basically carpet) and cleaned the crap out of the dash before hand. I used alcohol like crazy and the paint is still nice since 2004. Prep work will make all the difference in the world. I chose to locate real black pieces on stuff that would see more wear as I didn't think it would hold up.

Is it that hard to find pristine door panels? It's just a Taurus, right?...and that's the most common color. Get another pair and if they aren't nice enough for you, dye them correctly and swap them out in about 20 minutes...with all new x-mas trees.

I'm sure it isn't but finding them. I'd be tearing them apart regardless, so I didn't know if it'd be worth it to start from scratch or not. I probably will though. en route to Pick n Pull right now actually. There's a grey interior Gen 3 I'm about to take advantage of :woo-hoo:

Image Check out SEM products they have a wide variety of colors I redid leather seats with this and they match perfect TheLeather was in good shape just a little worn and discolored. clean them really good and use of scuffing pad If they are rough.if you do this sand lately and you won’t have any problems with the leather grain. Make sure you clean these at least three times cleaner the better just like if you’re going to paint metal . My driver seat looks just as good
