So, say I were to buy a crate transmission. How hard would it be to install a shift kit on it?

You have to pull the tranny apart. There is one point where you have to cross drill a planetary gear set with a long ~1/4" drill bit.

I'd say beyond the average hobbyists' range.

Oh, dang.

How much would you say that job is worth to have someone install? A couple hundred bucks? (Remember.. it's a crate tranny)

I have drilled many holes in stuff before. I could do it no problem. Will a wood drill bit work okay?

Nick, id say leave it to a professional. Not worth the chance of screwing up a brand new tranny. OTOH, If you just want to rebuild a tranny, or get a used one that will last for a bit, you are more than welcome to come yank the one out of my 98 parts car for cheap.

Well, the only person I talked to was from Ford Performance Parts. He has a Shift Kit in it.. but is a little above my price range, especially when I can get a rebuilt tranny off ebay for $700. I don't want to spend 400% more on one that is still rebuilt but just has a shift kit in it.. you know?

I would if I could though..

FPS trannies have more than just a shift kit; they do machine work to the casing itself and other mods including adding clutch packs and such. That said, I've never used an FPS tranny myself.

I've always wanted to have the time to pull a tranny apart and mess with the insides. I love tinkering with crap like that. Don't know that I'll have the time or space for the next several years as I'm about to go back to school. If my tranny takes a dump I'll bite the bullet and get an FPS unit. I'm going to be practically in Doug's backyard. If you really want to mess with a shift kit yourself, why not buy one that needs a complete rebuild or one out a junkyard for cheap and do it yourself? Then if you screw something up drilling, you aren't out as much money. Just a thought.

I got a trans-go shift kit for $28 bucks from a transmission shop in California. They are out there if you look for them.

if you do the R&R yourself
and
the transmission is rebuilt properly
you are good to go.
IF
you pay someone to do the R&R
and the tranny has issues
YOU
will pay the installer to pull it and reinstall
and
you will probably pay for transmission shipping
and you will probably get footballed back and forth by the original rebuilder
IF
they even exist or can be found, the list goes on and on

Either buy from a very reputable source (@3K$)
OR find a reputable local shop.
good luck
