I just got done removing the whole intake manifold and cleaning the thick layer of dirt and grime out of it, along with the passageway by the injectors, and the IAC. Vacuum is good. I can't find my code extractor at the time, so I can't pull codes. The idles jumps to about 1900 when it very first starts and then settles down anywhere from 1300-1700 (mostly around 1400). Any idas or suggestions???? Thanks ahead of time!

yo man. first off.......you don't need a code extractor to check ur codes.....you need a paper clip. Go to www.shotimes.com and this will show you how to check your codes. Second off, you need to reset your idle program. This tells the IAC how much to stay open so the idle is set right. Search for a post from SDPatt about how to set the idle. It's fairly simple.

Some new observations on my idle problem...I took her for a drive, and whenever I am crusing at any speed, if I push in the clutch and hold it in, the idle bounces between 1000 and 1500 and keeps bouncing til I let the clutch out...Any ideas?

That sounds like a failng or sticking idle air control valve. You can remove and clean it without taking the manifold off. But if that doesn't correct the problem, be prepared to replace it. They can be bought at auto supplies instead of through Ford.

Did you reset the idle program?

Yeah, I tried the idle reset program, and it did get the idle down to 1000 for the duration of the procedure of resetting the idle, but then jumped right back up. How do you take off the IAC without taking the manifold off? The lower screw looks nearly impossible to get to. If that valve is bad of malfunctioning, what would explain the jumping idle when the car is in motion and the clutch is in? Thanks for all your help....

For that pulsating idle...clutch in, coasting.

My 89 has been doing that intermittently that the last couple of weeks weeks or so. The IAB is only a month old....

Also have notice that my cruise control hasn't been working steadily. Each time it quit working, I found the cruise's throttle cable unclipped, but the pulsating idle would be gone. Clip it back on and the wierd idle would come back as would the cruise control, until the cable came off again...

I finally looked closer at it yesterday. It seems I had bent the cruise cable mounting bracket in toward the throttle body, while recently working in there. I bent it back to position, about 3/8 " travel and reconnected the cable. Last evening I had cruise and a stable idle. My guess is that the bent bracket was causing the CC cable to partially hold the throttle open and the IAB was getting cycled in an attempt to find the correct dashpot strategy.

Oh, well, check that CC cable bracket.
