Those of you who know me here know that I am about as mechanically proficient as a blind quadriplegic. Having said that, someone about as mechanically ******** as I bent my power steering pump pulley a while back and I just never got around to fixing it. Well a few days ago my Automatic Timing Belt Tensioner ceased to function and I had to take the car to ye olde mechanic. I was looking at the bent pulley while he was working on the car and I thought to myself "Self, we can fix that pulley." So I got online and found (thanks to SHO Forum) www.alfritz.com and acquired a power steering pump pulley and it should be here Friday. So my question is this: What is the best way to go about installing this pulley? I assume since it was bent that it might not be super easy to remove/replace. Please, go into as much detail as you have the time and patience, once I open the hood of that car, I will be in stupid mode, any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Wes

You need to lock the pulley in place, 19mm to loosen the nut, then the pulley comes straight off. The trick is in locking the pulley in place - many techniques to this ancient chinese secret... wink

Good luck.

oh, and it's alfitz.com, not alfritz.com... :)

Wes,
You go through the wheel well. Pull the liner out. I forget, since I put in a UDP there, but if the pulley has a hole in it you stick a really long screwdriver through the hole in the cars well through one of the holes in the pulley to keep it from turning as you tighten the nut. THe question is does the stock pulley have the holes in it?

Yes.

I'm trying to find a strapwrench now (the correct length) to hold it; I currently use a bent-nose prybar to lock it, or you can use a 12mm or 14mm (I forget) socket to lock onto the bolt behind there.

long prybar works well - locks with little effort.

Fred has that strapwrench worked for you before? I tried one on the alt. pulley and it wouldn't hold well enough for me.

Thanks for the heads-up on the strapwrench. It was just an idea I had one time, & I figured I'd try it out (haven't yet).

Alt Pulleys are typically impacted anyway, so I doubt it'd hold to begin with.

Kid,

I have used the Sears "Strap Wrench" to hold the crankshaft pulley and put 120 foot pounds of torque on the bolt. If I remember correctly SD Patt has also done this. I have also used a Strap Wrench to loosen an alternator pulley nut (and to replace it).

The trick is to get the strap leveraged so that it does not slip. Holding a pulley in place with metal tools, like a screwdriver or a prybar will work, but you risk damaging the pulley or some other part in the process.

Try a piece of hardwood, like a hammer handle, as a wedge. If space will not permit something that large, then at least wrap tape around the screwdriver or prybar to protect surrounding parts from scratches or gouges.

How the heck did you bend a power steering pump pulley in the first place? You may want to check the manual to see if there is an external pump shaft seal behind the pulley. I do not remember there being one, but if there is it would be a good time to replace it! If I remember right the seal is internal. rangerj
