How to test the CPS before installing?

Does anybody know how to test a CPS before I install it? It looks like a magnetic switch with 4 wires going to it, with three of the wires shielded and one not. I'd sure like to know how it works not just why it works. I'm also thinking of tappong the waterpump weep hole a puttin a small tube to direct the eventual water around the CPS. Just wonderin and ramblin. Sorry.

Thanks Scott, that did the trick. That article would be good reading for anybody on this group. I'm going to get out my wiring schematics and push some voltage to the pick-up and see if it was the crud on the inside of the vanes that was causing the problem. Thanks again.
