Hood Thoughts

So, I plan to do some fiberglass/CF fabbing and one of the things I'll be fabbing is a hood for the MKS (and maybe for the Taurus). To do this I'll be making some molds and whatnot. The question, though, is the sort of hood I would ultimately make a mold of.

I'm of the mind that a stock-appearance hood would end up being the best choice. If anyone wanted one, they could mod it in their image after they picked it up. The way I see it, I might not like the hood scoop Bob likes, and he might not like the vents Sarah likes, and I might not like any of that stuff.

But no matter what we liked, the hood's weight savings would still exist as a base for anyone.

most people when spending the money for a fiberglass/CF hood will go either a stock or cowl type...some people like the stock look and others like the more aggressive looks....that being said 2 molds would be the most logical way to go.

I have the Duraflex GT500 V2 hood in fiberglass. I would be down for the same hood built right and super lightweight in CF.

It's almost the easiest major body part to mold. I'm going to do some smaller stuff first to figure out the process and iron out problems, but as of right now, I absolutely plan to make a hood out of fg/c.f.

Probably other body panels too.

But one project at a time, heh.

If you are serous about replicating parts in CF, I would pay for CF fenders, sunroof plug and trunk.

One long-range obstacle for you would be that I have a MKS, and that would be the first stuff I did. Now, if I were comfortable with my skills after that, I would get my hands on Taurus parts to service that market.

And realistically, it would be expensive because everything would be laid by hand unless a company picked up the design. I guess I could waive labor if I were just doing it for the love.

It's certainly something I have to come up with a plan for. But if I get myself to the position where I feel like I can offer a quality piece of work, I'll certainly offer my services to the few that would be interested.

I know I'm going to lay FG first, because it's cheaper. Once I feel good about FG, I'll move to C.F. and learn what's different about that material. I've used FG before, but not on a large body part. I modified a PT cruiser hood to look like an SRT-4 hood, but I never got to the mold part.

I would LOVE (and pay for) a hood (cowled or scoop) that was a little more modest in appearance than the current GT500 offering. That one is just looks a little too, "Death Race 2000" for me. One similar to the 2010 SEMA SHO, is right up my alley.
