Hey guys, I'm obviously new here and need as much advice as I can get. I have a 1994 SHO w/ATX that I recently bought from a gal in NJ and after putting on about 1000 miles, the tranny puked on me. I believe that it's probably the pump. Before I bought it she said tranny was replaced at about 60,000 by Ford(it now has 89,000). My question to you guys is this: would it be ok to rebuild or do I really need a new one? Also, what would I be looking at cost wise? Any advice or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

New ones don't exist, most likely. You're going to get a rebuilt one no matter what.

Cost will vary. DIY - around $800. A good shop, around 1800. A beefed up unit, around $2500.

Transmission

Being a '94 SHO, I really have not looked into it but chances are as mentioned above...you can no longer get a new trans. Rebuilding the trans is your best bet. Just make sure you go to a reputable transmission service shop and you can have lots of miles ahead of you. In my '95, I still have the original trans after 160K and I know my time may be coming soon...perhaps I should change my trans fluid asap :)

Thanks for advice guys. When I said "new", I meant remanufactured. I have one quote already from one outfit called geartrans and I have to send my old trans back to them. Theirs comes with all brand new internals. Judging from the prices you guys are floating me it'll probably be a wash whether I swap trannies or have mine rebuilt. I just don't have the time to pull the old gal apart on my own. I just want to hear from those of you who have I little more time invested in the SHO's than me. As for a warranty, I believe the tranny has been in the car for several years. The dealership in NY that installed it folded and the couple I bought it from gave this car NO TLC, were deceptive about its condition and I don't want to talk to them anymore. So thats where I'm at. Thanks again quys.

Do not buy an internet transmission. Find a local shop with a good rep. Go in and talk with them.. Tell them about the trans-go shift kit ( actually I like the superior better for the ax4s ) see what they can do for you. Tell them what you have to spend, and see what happens.

Or drive the car to me, and I will build you one **** of a transmission.

Thanks Mike, I do have a mech. that I trust, he has done great work on my F150 and Mustang. I guess after my experience buying this car over the net, I should try to keep things local. I'm having trouble finding anything on the internet for this tranny period. Can you do me a favor and point me in the right direction for rebuild kits. Getting stuff for the SHO is not like getting stuff for the Stang. Thanks, Fred.

If you are going to have the transmission built at a shop, he will get the parts for you. I use raybestos clutch packs, and all the seals are from Axiom. Just a local supplier.

If you need a nicely built torque converter, let me know. I have a TC company too.

Just keep that stuff on the PM please.

Just updating guys, I have spoken with my mech. and he's talking about putting in a salvage trans(just one option). Just so I know the facts, is the tranny in my SHO the same as in other Ford front drivers(reg. Taurus, Ford vans, ect...)? What do you guys think?

yeah, definitely. The 93 ATXs blew up left and right, and the SHO specific tranny has much beefier internals to (almost) handle the higher HP of the SHO engine.

If the guy doesn't know the difference between a 93 and a 94/95 tranny and doesn't know the difference between an SHO/SLO tranny, honestly, I'd take my business elsewhere. Yeah, it might be kind of snooty and high-expectation and whatnot, but do you want to drop $2K on a guy who doesn't really know what he's talking about?
