I need some help here, please. I am unable to find a good used front head with good valves and cams. Anybody know of any for sale?
I have a cam failure head with 8 bent intake valves. I had a lineup for one for $250, head and cams good. Turned out they sent me a v6 head instead of the v8 head. They are crediting me the money back and don't want the head back. BUT...I am still without the head and cam I need.
What is the opinion of welding a spun cam? The one place in GA said they do them all the time and they started the whole thing.
What about getting the head rebuilt? Worth it? 8 new valves and I assume a valve job. Do these heads crack when the valves get bent?

There is a front head on E-bay right now for $250.00, Do a search by "FORD TAURUS SHO 3.4 FRONT HEAD" I don't know anything about it, but I would e-mail the guy to find out the condition.

Or you could wait until Ray Davis gets another one.

If the ebay one doesnt go through your best bet would be NESHO.com. You could shoot them an email asking for cylinder head availability.

Ugh. :shakehead

Once a camshaft sprocket has spun, welding it is not advisable for many reasons.

When welding cams as a preventative measure, the welds secure the sprocket to the shaft, preventing the sprocket from moving and wearing away the factory swages. This way, the stress on the sprocket while turning is evenly spread across the factory mating surfaces.

Once those swages have been destroyed by the spinning sprocket, welding the sprocket back in place results in all that stress being put entirely on the welds. Because of the nature of welding by hand, and the limited surface area on the sprocket and shaft for the welds to penetrate, the slightest imperfection in the welds can cause them to break and next thing you know you've got another blown up motor.

The other problem is that getting the sprocket properly timed and aligned on the shaft after it has spun is very difficult (even with a CNC machined jig). We actually had a customer in NC last year who had sent his cams (including one spun front intake cam) to this same outfit in GA for welding. When he got the cams back, he knew something was wrong. He sent us his cams and asked us to look them over for him. The sprocket on the spun cam was welded CROOKED! The thing was cocked about 5 degrees!

The best part is, this customer called that vendor in GA and was told "Don't worry about it, there's plenty of LATERAL RUNOUT in the timing chain." Needless to say he wasn't comforted by this so he got in touch with us.

We sent him a replacement cam for very, very, short money. We felt badly that he had been porked by a supposedly reputable vendor.

So yeah, I don't recommend welding a spun cam. Just get a replacement.

Thanks to all.
I saw the one on Ebay. He said that he sold the cams in a different auction....The head is good with good valves also. This prob. my best bet right now.

Thank you for the welding information. I have not been able to find cams for sale. What should they go for? I didn't want to spend alot of money on this car.
Thanks

********Is $250 a good price for a front head with no cams?**************
