Good tire size for 17x7 wheel on a Gen 2.

I still think the S-Drives are Junk. They replaced the ES100's and missed the mark by a long shot.

?????

Tests have been good, and the few personal results I've seen have been positive.

These, like the ES100s, are not the ultimate summer tire. But, for 95%+ of folks, these tires should be fine.

For the rest of us who don't give a crap about treadwear and tire life, yes, there are better.

I've Auto-Crossed on both, in the same car and noticed right away that the S-Drives got VERY greasy in one run at the end of the course, causing the front end wash out pretty quick. The ES-100's could also be overheated to do the same thing, but only after 4 back to back runs. Another Issue I had with them is the road noise. Honest to god, they sounded like knobby 4X4 tires on the smoothest of roads. If they were a off the wall insanely sticky tire, I would be ok with that - But since they were primarily serving on a DD car and in my opinion, performed like crap compared to the ES100, It was REAL annoying. I chucked them after only 10,000 Miles.

Made the switch to RE760 Sports and can not be happier.

235/45/17's on the Cobra rims for years. Sumitomos, Dunlops, Goodyear Eagle F1's from Nenos car, and now Bridgestones waiting in the back seat for a good mounting.

Kinda sound like the Direzza DZ101s I had.

I don't give a crap about road noise. After driving the truck with mud tires, ALL car tires are fine!!

I wasn't very pleased with the ES100s on the SHO. At the time, they were probably the "best" tires I ever bought (in 2003), but I've had better tires since.

The DZ101's are also Junk tire. I remember Autocrossing with a guy who accidently bought Direzza DZ101 thinking he had purchased the Direzza Star Spec. Boy was he ****** when he saw what the tire he had meant to buy could do over what he accidently bought.

As far as road noise, I'm hardly exaggerating when I say the S-Drives were as loud as mud tires at lower speeds (50 and below). ES100's were ok tires for what they were. I was happy with them because at the time they were the first tire that I had competitvly (besides drag racing) driven the car on, so I had nothing to compare them to.

FWIW, a tire calc states that a 235/50/17 will put you very close to the original speedo reading; just .4% slower. A 225/50/17 will have you reading 1.1% too fast. Might not be a concern for some people, but I'd rather a speedo read slighty slower than slighter faster.

Tire selection is a little limited in that size, but I can still spot some good tires.

It all depends on the car. A 235 may work on a Gen 2/3, but will(most likely) rub on a Gen 1. And, as you stated, it is not offered in many passenger car configurations. :salute:

Sorry, I should have been more specific. That was in comparison to a Gen 2's stock tire size, which AFAIK, is 215/60/16. Please correct me if I'm wrong, and if I am wrong, then my previous statements are null and void.

On two Gen 1s, as well as two Gen 2s, I have found that the speedometer & odometer, with stock tires, read 3-3.5% low......

It took three tickets for an 81 in a 65 before I figured it out on my original Gen 1 (I thought I was doing 78-79).

A slightly shorter tire ain't all bad.....

Switching from what I assume is the stock tire size to a 235/45/17 will make your speedo read 3.2% too fast. So, your SHOs would have had a much more accurate speedo just by adding some sweet wheels/tires! What a sweet deal :)

I also take back my previous statement about a somewhat limited tire selection in 235/50/17. The tire selection is abysmal compared to 45/17, which has some great tires.

So, 235/45/17: doesn't rub, can possibly make your speedometer more accurate, can make your car look good, and give you some more (high quality) rubber on the road. Nice.
