My pick would be MB Quarts or the Alpine Type X series which are about $350 a pair.

I have heard both of these in different cars and both sound very clear/clean but unless your doing the rest of the car with Alpine TypeX's the MB Quarts would be best overall.

That is, what diameter and depth of speaker will work in Gen II doors? I am thinking of components, that is, separate woofer and tweeter, mounting the woofer in the door and then a tweeter nearby, maybe on the door or at the end of the dash.

6 1/2" fit the doors, what you have to watch out for though, is depth.

i ran into a problem with my fosgate fanatic x's when i popped em in, had to make up some stand offs out of some shaved [on a planer] 3/4 MDF to get them to fit and sound right.

also, just to add something, if you can avoid using the stock wiring for the speakers, do it.. the stuff is tiny... use some 14 or 16 awg wire for that.

I've had good experience with Kenwood eXcelon DualMag speakers...$180 a pair (my friend gets em for $80) :D They sound very good for the price, have an internal crossover network for the woofer and tweeter, and the tweeter is on an adjustable mount so they can be aimed (much like components) without having any tweeters to mount. That's just my .02, if I had the cash I'd probably go with MB Quart.

If doing components, and you want to put the woofers in the stock location, I believe the best place for tweets is in the plastic of the door panel just below and just forward of the speaker grilles. If you can get a swivel mount, you can have good imaging if they're aimed at you. And, yeah, many components with good magnet structures will be too deep. I had to drop from a 6.5" a/d/s/ setup to the similar 5.25" a/d/s/ components. With good subwoofers in your system, this could mean a minimal difference. boink

I'm glad to hear that 6 1/2" diameter speakers will fit, as its nice for better bass. How deep a speaker will fit, in inches? I can see how some speakers might be too deep. Anyone have any experience with Diamond speakers? Magnolia here is having a good sale on them, Diamond component 6 1/2" for $139.00 a pair.

Yeah I have heard a lot of good things about Diamond Audio. Heard some real nice Hex(?) speakers a couple years ago, very nice. I am going on very distant memory but I think the depth is 2 3/8"?? I think Crutchfield can accurately tell you. boink

I am now leaning toward Dynaudio, hoping that the 6 1/2" will fit!! Their 4" dome midrange is great.
Thanks for the information!

FYI, and i know from personal experience, you can run 5x7's in the GEN II door with no troubles at all. I personally had Kicker components, mids mounted in the doors, and tweeters mounted on the dash.. The crossovers can be mounted anywhere, I chose in the back by the factory amp, but you can mount them anywhere... I never took pics of it, before I removed them from my SHO, aft. I crashed it, but they do fit, and well... Remove the originals/plates, and I know I securely put in 2 screws, maybe even a 3rd, but they cleared well, and sounded SWEET IMO! Let me know if you have any questions, but I figured I would put in my $.02, so you know they will fit..

Can we get a mathematics expert in here? I do believe that you get more cone area in a 6.5" speaker than you would in a 5x7". Besides, your higher quality speaker brands generally don't make oval speakers unless they are the lower quality lines.

But again, I will acknowledge, buy what works best for you! boink

I have never heard an oval speaker that sounded as good as a high quality round speaker, probably due to quality of manufacture. Size is not all that matters.
I wonder if the Dynaudio 7" MW160 speakers will fit well in the 93 SHO doors, or are they too deep? I am hoping they fit as they seem to be around the best quality bass.

Do you need dimensions on the MW160? I purchased another set for the other SHO and have the box sitting right here.

As I replied to Dave's question privately, I am not sure myself if the 7's will fit in the door without modification. I had my doors built out to accomodate two of them for each door. I never checked to see it one would fit. I did have an MB Quart and another time an ADS speaker in there in the past, but have never really just put them behind the doors. I have always had the doors customed.

It would be interesting to find out.

I found that Focal offers a 5 3/8" long excursion woofer, model Utopia 5ws, available online for about $120.00, with a response below 45HZ, with a mounting depth of 74mm, so that might be a good fit for the doors, very good genuine bass with less, if any, modification. This is the best bass response spec I have yet seen.

Dave, the Focal 5ws (mini-subs) are not going to give you the output that you are looking for. I had considered going that route in one of my other vehicles however after hearing just a pair of them I was not impresssed. However, if you put 2 or 3 sets of them in they can be very impressive. The system I heard had four of them in the door. (Thunderbird SC- Dale Fontenot's IASCA winning vehicle, now sold to Mike Peterson)

Bottom line with them is that they sound good when multi speakers are used. With an 87 db/W/m you are going to need more than just two.
