Back in Michigan ... again.
I'm taking 9 days off come the end of this month and I really, REALLY need to get away from everything. Seriously, it's just me, the Subie wagon and a multi-tool and the further lost I can get in the woods the better.

I have some favorite haunts of my own, but I'd love to hear some other destinations in the area, upper MI or lower. I like lots of woods, secluded campsites (if your site is even a campground), DEFINITELY nothing like popular state parks, maybe some nearby bike/hiking trails, rivers, etc.

Give me some ideas :)

Head a bit north of Whitehall and check out some two tracks out there. You can easily get away from the world up in that neck of the woods. I used to do that all the time.

Da UP eh?

Anything north of the bridge will yield untold numbers "hiding" spots.

The one I PMd you last week is probably further north than you want...until about june.

The little lake that's there might still have ice bobbing around.

Lemme get google earth running and see if I can find you a spot...or 400.

I ended up at a small forest service campground about 10 miles south of Alpena, right on lake Huron. Had there been others in the park it may not have been that great as the sites were sparsely wooded and somewhat close together, but being it was after the Memorial Day weekend the place was deserted.

Unfortunately, it got DAMN cold... 30's the first night and 20's the second. And it got too windy for a fire... I had a small cooking fire for about 40 minutes and that was it, just too many dried pine needles littering the ground, and though I was barely 100 yards from the water it was very wooded. I was at least a little bit protected by trees though; being out at the water's edge with sustained 30+ MPH winds at 11pm with plummeting temps was very surreal and thought provoking, but it was also pretty damn cold.

Didn't really help though. Reality kept its grip and I went back home just a day later. Hopefully I can do something again later this year, but that would mean a job change because my time is all but used up at this point.
