89, 90 & some 91 SHOs still have a cable shifter & probably have a bit more wear & tear on them. On the other hand the 89 SHO is a little lighter than a Gen II but it lacks Antilock Brakes and a few other comfort features. Its a tough question... thats why I have both :)

Structurally and performance-wise there's nothing to choose between 'em, a sunroofless '89 would be the lightest because it's missing stuff (like ABS) that was standard on later cars.

It's a tossup on body shape, I think I like the Gen 1 shape better overall but the Gen 2 trim is cleaner and less fussy around the nose. The '90-91 dash is definitely the best of the bunch; the Gen 2 interior is just a little nasty in spots.

I'd almost like to find a good set of '86-88 Taurus door panels and have them redone in black to match the rest of my '91 interior. The earlier door panels had nicer materials and no hard plastic where you'd typically touch them.

'93-up had the lighter solid rear discs and '94 got the bigger front discs but they're easily swapped.

gen 2s look way better

With a good set of aftermarket wheels, and a nice stance, Gen I's look just as good. My only gripe with the Gen I's are the dash. Has a dated look to them, but to me they're more of a sleeper then the Gen II as far as looks go.

It all comes to the aestetics (sp?) basicly because the egines are all the same except for ATX's which has a 3.2 engine (93-95) that has a little more torque to compensate the tranny. There's some details here and there that differs though , like the cable shifter/rod shifter , 89 is non-abs , air bag passenger ..and so forth.

I think GEN1 interior sucks but that's my opinion.

And also having/buying a clean GEN 1 is almost an art because they are getting rare specially in the rustbelt area. Don't forget that a 89 is a 18 years old car.

On a side note Mr95GL , do you have the dyno sheet of that 300 hp claim in your sig?

I happen to think the Gen 1 dash shape is a lot nicer, and the Gen 2 door panels are just nasty, too much hard plastic, but of course that's just my take.

Shame that Ford didn't take the money they put into crap like the 'Twilight Sentinel' autolamp and put it into better door panel materials.

So far as I can tell, when it comes to material quality in the Gen 1/Gen 2 Tauruses and excepting the SHO-specific bits and mandated stuff like airbags, the '86-87 Tauruses were the most expensive to build. From '88 onward every change Ford made took cost out of the car.

Having owned more than my fair share of Gen IIs, I still love the styling of a Gen I, and am always looking for an 89. I think they're smoother looking, and damned if I don't want one that's flat black with black slicers and tinted windows....sleeper from ****.

the front bumper cover is soo nice and gives the gen 1 a nice front stance. Both cars can look great when slightly modified(shaved emblems, tinted, lowered, wheels). But i just personally like a white/black gen 1 the best.

Gen1s have a more well built interior. And the more "ridgid" body cladding make it seem like a more solid car.

As stated, the 89 non-sunroof cars were lighter...no sunroof/antilocks/airbags.

As a daily driver, the gen 2s are "NICER". But, gen ones are better(IMO)
