Gen1 tail lights all interchangeable?

Okay I want to buy a spare set of tail lights for my 89' so i can spray tint and clear them propperly and have them ready to install when I get back to pick up the car.

I noticed that some Gen1 tail lights are a 2 piece unit and some are 1 piece units. Are they all interchangeable?

What about the 86-88 lights will they work on 89-91's? They look to be the same shape but have different lense styling.

That would make the car alittle different. With alittle shiny black tint and some clear for protection I would mask off the back up light section so the white would show through to break it up alittle.

If your lights are in 2 pieces they are broken. It's common to find just the lenses for sale (which are in 2 pieces) but the rear housing is one piece. Those lights you have listed as 86-88 lights are not year specific. Those lights are Taurus L lights. Any 1st gen taillight will fit on any 1st gen. Ford used the red/amber style lights on all 86-88 models and on most '91 Plus SHOs and the red/red style lights on all 89-91 models except the L. The L style light may have existed before 89 but I have never seen it on anything older than an '89.

Ha! I was going through my pictures from the Indy convention to see if I had some of the rear of that car... beat me to it. I think they would look really good with a slight tint.

they arent only on the plus. any 91 taurus gl lx or sho.
89 90 red turn signals
91 yellow turn signals

they arent completely interchangable but if you search there is a writeup that i think blacklabel did that shows you have to change the wiring around a lil bit but it looked real easy.

I check the yard up here bi-weekly for gen1 taurii...no luck so far. Most have rusted out and been crushed long ago...

Yeah, the amber turn signals have an extra hole for a bulb just for the turn signal. On my plus, I got a set of slo tails from an '89 I believe and i cut a matching hole to accomadate the extra turn signal bulb. I got an extra set of tails to niteshade and keep the ones with the amber signals stock in case i wanted to switch back to them. If any1 needs more info, i can give a better description what to do.
