Timing covers need to come off. You will need to re-time the engine. It's not that bad of a job, just do some research before you dive in, or have a shop manual around handy.

LOOK at the front seal (depending on the type) after you install it. I had a buddy replacing his front seal while I was doing the engine top this weekend, and his aftermarket seal from a known SHO vendor SPLIT & blew out. It was total carp, a cheap POS seal. We scurried around to find a seal from another SHO guy somewhat locally to get him back on the road. I didn't get to see it before he buttoned it up, but I don't think he mis-installed it. It was visually obviously blown-out after firing it up, seeing the oil **** out of there, & tearing it down again. after removing the seal, I could see where it tore at a seam in the seal, and the spring behind there was sucked out of it.

Good luck!

You'll need to get some stuff out of the way, but it's not too bad: battery tray, FR dampener, PS reservoir, PS and ALT belts, timing covers. Be very careful to use the correct thread metric bolts with the harmonic balancer puller when you remove the crank pulley. Then remove timing belt and timing pulley. Drill small hole in old seal, thread self tapping screw in a couple of turns, and pull old seal. Replace ONLY with Ford seal. Shonutperformance.com has them. http://www.shophoenixproject.com/maint.htm has a walkthrough, front 60K procedure.

from what i recall.... you can use your bolts (2) on the intake manifold to pull the timing sprocket out. For seals, I went to autozone and got the felpro seals. I replaced it about 2 years ago and hasn't leaked. The harmonic balancer is a pain to pull though. Crank bump method works good. I used a high torque 1/2 impact to get that bad boy off.

Matty... Honestly.. I've heard things about felpro's rotating seals... I personally have bought Ford Cam Seals, and Front and Rear crank seals. Just a real pain in the butt to get to them, over a 3 dollar savings. If it lasts a week longer, its worth 3 bux to me.

As for Head gaskets, and intake seals, and such.. Fel Pro is great... just something about the round ones.. Just what a few lil birdy's have told me anyway. My Fel Pro gaskets for the Malibu were nothing short of sexy compared to the plastic ones GM made. :)

And GM's stock idea of a Lower Intake Manifold gasket

Holy cow, what a difference in engines!

Fel-Pro makes some very good seals. For the front main crankshaft seal, I have always used the National 710220 for about $6.75 from RockAuto.com and $8.99 from O'Reilly. I have never had a problem installing them or having them leak after installation.
