Like it says, I just did my front 60k...My timing belt tensioner was supposedly broken, and after a few WOT runs the car would make a knocking noise, Numerous people said it was the tensioner...I put a low mile ATX tensioner in there while I had everything apart. Well now that the car is running and everything is done I hear a knocking noise...

It almost sounds like it did when the tensioner would fail and cause the timing belt to become slack and slap on the timing belt covers..But More quiet.

It appears to be coming from the rear head just below the IAB valve.

I dont know how to explain the noise..But it almost sounds like a valve shim way outta spec, but I never heard this noise PRE front 60k....

I know I need to check and replace some valve shims because there is noticable valve noise..Nothing to bad though.

What do you guys think of by the sounds of it??

Also..Who rents shims these days?

Thanks!

Put your fingers on the bulged area of the cam covers, if you "feel" the clack along with hearing the clack, it's chain slap.

Another vote for the timing chains. Is/was the knocking/clicking not rhythmic, ie somewhat intermittent? I noticed the same thing on mine after it was idle over a few weekends while doing the spark plug wires and plug well seals. I noticed the noise on startup and it went away after a while. Someone told me that when the car sits undriven for an extended period of time that the noise becomes evident. I could feel the clicking when touching a screwdriver to the bulged part of the cover.

You didn't hammer the crank damper on the crankshaft did you?

**** no, I aint stupid!!

I heated that sucker up and slid it right on.

Honestly though, What does happen when you hammer them on??

Screws up the oil pump or something?

if you hammer it on it could damage the thrust bearings. Make sure the damper bolt was tourqed to spec. if it was not it could cause a knocking type sound.
