Ford shows off Police Interceptor Stealth concept ahead of SEMA debut

In addition to the raft of Mustangs and F-150s that Ford will be debuting at this year's SEMA show, this special Police Interceptor Stealth concept will be on display in Las Vegas this week. Ford designer Melvin Betancourt took inspiration from the SR-71 stealth airplane used in the 1950s and 1960s to create a Taurus-based Police Interceptor that manages to be flashy yet still able to fly under the radar.

Compared to a standard Police Interceptor sedan, the Stealth concept is lowered by one inch and rides on sinister 22-inch wheels. The rest of the car has been blacked out as much as possible – smoked taillamps, tinted windows and black trim all around the car make for a package that, as Betancourt says, gives the illusion of "there, but not there." Wow, after being stuck driving the Crown Vic police interceptors for years, I would love to try the stealth vision of the SHO PI package....some of the Crown Vics were a real handful to drive I can't imagine how much nicer the SHO would handle in comparison. But alas, I won't have an opportunity to drive one...retired in April so no more cruisers for me.

It's a Ford produced concept, that is (a) not a reality yet, (b) likely funded by FMC and no one else, and (c) is being displayed by Ford (and not a gov. agency) at the SEMA trade show.

Where, in any of what's in the article or in Ford's press release, is there an implication of your tax dollars funding any part of this vehicle?

And furthermore, if this PI were a reality (though I doubt without the 22" wheels), so what? Police departments and federal agencies use a variety of vehicles for their undercover work; so what if this were one of them? What if it were a Charger SRT-8, or a Range Rover Sport instead? Or a Quattroporte? Would those be a problem, too? If so, I've got some bad news for you man...

I've seen lighly modded Civics pull away from both. But, in the end, you can't beat the radio.

I recall a 13-yo kid that outran the cop in a Camaro SS. The cop, after listening to him talk, thought the car was 'invincible' to the public counter-parts... He then wrecked it while the 13-yo in an M3 had his way.

They don't need 'fast cars'.

OTOH, I do find it ironic that a cop in a CV will do 100mph to catch up to me to give me a speeding ticket for going 10mph over, (in my FAR more capable car) because speeding is not safe.

Dear aftermarket companies. Make that exact front grill and it will sell like hotcakes. While your at it use the same design for the lower grill too. Leave off the Ford emblem and offer an option SHO emblem that is smaller and in the lower driver side corner.

Whats inside the compartment above the glove box? It looks like tear gas and extra mags. I wouldn't mind that in my car.

I would suspect that it is extra mags, but it might not be "tear" gas there are several different gases available for law enforcement or it could be non-lethal ammo.
