I have an annoying flickering dash battery indicator light in my '89 SHO and I was wondering if it would be ok to just unhook the sensor at the battery? The sporadic flickering is driving me nuts! Any advice? Thanks!

sounds like your car is tring to tell you the altenator is no good and will strand you ! unhook your battery when your car is running , if it dies get a new alt.

NO DON'T UNHOOK THE BATT. WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING. THIS WILL INDEED SEND YOUR ALT TO AN EARLY GRAVE.

Does it flicker only at idle or at all rpm ranges. If only at idle then the alt output is weak and you need a new voltage reg. Later SHO have an internal reg and require a new/rebuilt alt but the older SHO's may have an external reg (anyone confirm this). If it flickers at rpm ranges you may have a loose connection/broken wire (or the indicator lug has been overtightened and internally broke) at the alt or some where in the charging system.

BTW the indicator light is not connected at the batt its connected at the alt.

If flickers at all RPM ranges and only does it when it wants to...I can go for several days and it does not flicker once then it will flicker all day on occassions. ??????? Loose wire then? :hail:

I had this same condition...it would be random and then got more on schedule. There is a clip with one wire on the alternator. Unplug this clip (with the car off) and spray some cleaner in both sides of the connection. Re-attach and drive car. Light should no longer come on.

The light is telling you that the output of the alternator is low, but it just has a bad connection to the alternator.

Go and get your alternator tested and go from there, It may be a dying alternator or a bad lead from it. The lead on mine broke and it was arcing from the alternator to the wire.
