fan problems continued...

I pulled the fan out today and the relay that controls it. I went through the diagnostics on the relay with a voltmeter as per instructions in someones earlier post. The relay seemed to be ok except that the wires to the cooling fan were dead even with the a/c on max. Then I pulled the fan and discovered that, upon hooking it up to 12 V dc it doesnt work. What are the chances of these problems occurring simultaneously...Id like to kick the guy who sold me the car in the *** for not telling me about the fan, it was a long drive home and the car could easily have overheated!! Anyone have any suggestions as to what, if anything im missing? Wrong post section for this question but here it goes anyway, Anyone have a cheap source for a replacement relay/fan? Dealership wants a **** of a lot of money for the the relay...I guess i might just get an aftermarket box fan...but i really dont want to...

I have been reading more posts left by people with similar problems. The pervading suggestion is that for much less money than getting a new ccrm ine can piggyback a new "generic" relay into the wiring. I suppose that the relays have four "pins" on them, one goes to 12v positive (common), one goes to return, one goes to ground and one goes to EEC signal line? I would just tap these four wires, mabey with vampire connectors, then seal everything up tight with silicone and tape the new relay to the side of the CCRM? Someone slap me if im being crazy... slap

mabey some help this time...I have everything apart, the CCRM is in pieces on my table. The following is a "sketch" of the layout of the relays:

Hope this works alright on the post...anyway, I need to know which of the asterisks shown represents the fan relay. I have a lead on a new relay which is a nearly oem replacement, aside from some mounting stuffs I can lop off. It is two dollars. A new CCRM is 200 dollars. Please, a little help.

ok for reasons unknow my little graphic there got messed up. A better verbal description. There are four relays housed within the CCRM. Three sit one atop one another on the "plug" side of the unit. The fourth sits to the right of the three in a row. I need to know which is the fan relay, the one on the right?top left?middle left? bottom left? thanks!

What letter is on the top of your CCRM? Your best bet might be to look for a good used one. I've got a spare "M" here that I do not need. Worked perfectly when removed from my car. I replaced it with a newer one.

I've had my CCRM open and tested the relays. Don't know which is which but I could tell if one was bad.

Using an ohm meter test the post on the relays. between two you should get a resistance reading of 25=560 ohms (just guessing). This would be the coil of the relay. The others should all read open.

If you want connect 12V+ and 12V- to the relay coil and you can then test the current carrying contacts.

From my experiences with relays either the coil is open, high resistance, or the current carrying contacts are bad. More than likely coil problems.

To hook an outside relay up would require one that can carry 40 amps or more. Not cheap but I would suggest a solid state relay. These have no contacts to wear out.

SHOZ, thanks for the advice on testing the relay. I found some relays online for stereo installations that are made by bosch and rated for 12v 40a but they have this little bracket thing id need to chop. They are only like 2 dollars so i figured I could desolder the faulty relay(s) and put in these as a replacement. Of course first ill check at radioshack for more exact replacements. This seems to be a rather common problem Iv encountered in reading older posts, hopefully this thread will be of some assistance to those in the future with similar problems. Its too bad, relays usually almost never go bad...an item like this should never need servicing. And now, just because i love it: throwup
