EGR.....valve or position sensor?

I pulled codes to see what my CE light has been.
I am getting 1 o2 sensor and then EGR (code 172 I think it was)

Auto Zone has EGR Valve and EGR position sensor. Each is about 40.00.

Can you tell from that code if it was one or the other? do I need to do both?

172 is an O2 code and does not pertain directly to the EGR system.

Was there some other code?

Actually first pull off the EGR and the pipe it is connected to. Check this pipe first, if there are holes in the pipe it will screw up your O2 sensors and your EGR. To fix it have it silver soldered back together or have a new pipe brazed in. They are no longer made and good luck finding a good one at the junkyard. If you didnt get EGR codes then replcae the O2 sensors.

i will look for that pipe and see what I can find.

I got 3 codes total. one was like 539....A/C on durring test. one was the o2 code. the other was an egr code. I have it written down...but i dont have it handy...I will see if i can find exactly what that code was
