I tried doing a couple searches on this but never really had any luck, but maybe I missed it.

I just bought a Gen 1 that does not have any factory keyless entry or door keypad (I don't even think they offered that in '89 did they?) Anyway... when you pull the door handle up it is supposed to illuminate around the handle & exterior door lock cylinder. However, only the passenger side lights up, not the drivers. I'm thinking possibly something is burn out? I took apart the lock cylinder & pulled off the door panel and from what I can tell the electrical wires going to the cylinder are all connected (though I don't know if they are actually working as I"m not skilled enough to test & diagnose electrical issues) I tried to see if there was a way to separate or take apart any part of the actual lock cylinder but there didn't seem to be a way.

So does anyone have any idea why it doesn't work or what I should check?

How does the thing illuminate anyway? Is there a bulb somewhere in the cylinder?

It could be burn out. The first thing to check is to see if you are getting power to the connector for the bulb. If you are getting power there then you will have to replace the light. The light is built into the lock but if you are very careful you can take it apart and replace just the light ring, you will have to glue it all back together though. If you don't want to do that you can get a replacement lock and have it rekeyed to your car.
