door adjustment question

Any one have advice on how to adjust the doors? I got a new passenger door to replace mine that had holes in it, and got it on, but can get it adjusted right. Got the door to close, but it hits the rear door at the top, or wants to grab the weather strip at the front by the windshield on the a pillar. I see on the hinges it has adjustment for up down, and in out, but can figure out how to move it forward. Bottom half door seems good in opening, but the top of the door seems too rearward.

That would be one most PITA thing to adjust on any automotive! It can be achieve with patience and diligently.

You will need to open door and use long extension to access then loosen the top hinge that is on "A" pillar. There are two bolts, one on the outside and inside just above kick panel that you will need to pull glove box down to access.

As for bottom hinge on "A" pillar, same thing one on outside and inside the kick panel...loosen then snug it a lil' to create pivot point then ease the top hinge forward...if not achieve what you want it to be then it may be necessary to loosen bottom ones to move whole door forward. If the forwarded door come in contact with your fender after you achieve the setting between rear/ front door, you will might need move fender forward a tad.

I also find that it may be necessary to remove the striker in order to adjust.

Tips, you could use the filler speader to run thru the door/fender gap to ensure if its gapped evenly.

Thanks so much! I had not realized that hinge could be moved forward on the a pillar. I didn't realize there was a bolt inside as well. Now tomorrow I can go and finish it. Was wondering if I was gonna have to go to a body shop.

it's fairly new, I replaced them all a few years ago when the plastic on them broke and the doors would rattle, or not seal properly.

Easiest to adjust when you have the fenders off. You close the door and position it exactly where you want then tighten the bolts. You might be able to get to them after removing the fender liner instead of the whole fender.

Agreed. The fenders are pretty easy to remove, and once they're off you can make all of the adjustment you need to very easily. I adjusted all of my panel gaps like this when my car was apart for paint.

Got things adjusted best I could, it's much better now. Thanks for telling me how to get at those bolts inside the glove box and kick panel. body lines are lined up pretty good now, especially at rear door, front is pretty close, but door is a little in and fender is a little out, but can't get the fender in any more without it hitting the hood, and door is all the way out. But this car has had a ruffer life before I got it and fixing the door made it look much better. I figure someday when I get it painted then I can make everything look perfect again.

I also plasti-dipped the mirrors, since I had access to them with the door panels all off. had to do the drivers side too so they would match, what a big improvement over the faded and nasty looking housings.
