Which is exactly what the digital instrument clusters do . . . .

. . . . only without the shoddy wiring and shade-tree wiring "techniques".

PLEASE DON'T HACK YOUR HARNESSES LIKE THEY HAVE IN THOSE IMAGES !

:scared:

Found this over on the hack-a-day site... it's pretty cool. You just tap into the VSS and Injector wires and it will tell you what your instantaneous and average MPG are. Also, MPH. Pretty neat.

A basic vaccum guage would do the same thing.
High vaccum = good fuel economy
Low or 0 vaccum = No fuel economy
We used to have one of these in our old motor home. They called it an economy meter.;)

I remember those. My parents had one on there Malibu Station wagon with red, yellow, and green area.

There is a special pin on the ECU that is used for the MPG calculations on the digital clusters rather than using the injector signal.

But what information is that "special" pin sending from the EEC ? Is it sending a pre-calculated number that is simply displayed on the digital cluster, or is it sending the same basic information that is used when taping into the injector harness? Everyone of the various digital clusters I've pulled, used one or more PCBs between the source signal (ie. dash harness) and the digital cluster.

I largely suspect that someone has simply copied (reverse engineered) the circuitry F*** used in it's digital dashes, otherwise they would have had to determine how to convert the injector pulse into a measureable fuel quantity, then develop/write the algorithm to compensate for the various factors that affect fuel economy.

Oh chill dude!

You of all people should recognize the [electrical] hazards associated with having a hacked-setup like that - especially under-the-hood. To some it may look cool ( . . . right), but what if someone here frys their main engine harness or dash harness because they don't fully understand what they're getting into.

Not to mention that some of the stuff the hypermilers are doing are unsafe, are dangerous, or way over-the-top.

JEEZ! SORRY PEOPLE! I WAS JUST POSTING A COOL LINK! grumble grumble
