Diagnose engine knock

My 1993 5-speed car has an engine knock. It is very difficult to start. I got it running yesterday, and the oil light was not illuminated. How should I determine where the knock is coming from? I would be thrilled if I don't have to replace the engine! I have to flutter the throttle to keep the car running, so I am limited in diagnostics.

you might need a second person to keep it running while you track the noise. Only 1-2 places where knock really happens on these cars. rod bearings are highest on list.
