So I am in the middle of the 60k front maintenance and this connector on the left:
Shosenser4

ends like this:

Shosenser3

It's the frayed metal wires sticking out on the top.

Whats the deal? is it broken? Seems to me it should go somewhere.

Also while removing it i chipped the crank sensor:
Shosenser

Will that affect the function of it at all?

IIRC the bare metal wire is simply a signal shield wire and intercepts electromagnetic interference (EMI) before it messes with the crank signal.

The chip should not affect the sensor. It's not where either of the magnets are.

just replace it - my experience is that if you use the old one, it will just fail about 2 months later, so you have to tear the whole thing apart again. one of those Murphy's law things....

This. It always seems to bite you in the ass. Personally, I'd get a new one. I'm 90% sure it will work fine, though. They're pretty simple sensors.

It's called a drain wire, and I agree with everyone else, might as well replace it while you're in there.

Is the bare wire suppose to attach something? Does it ground to one of the 2 mounting screws?

No it doesn't attach to anything, did you not read what Hawkeye said? It would be best to just replace it while you have it out and the car apart.

Yes, I read what he said. But he didn't mention specifically if it plugged into something or was affixed to something. I haven't encountered a loose wire like this before while working on cars.

I really really hate replacing parts that aren't broken yet, I realize its preventative maintenance but I feel like its a waste of money. All this talk on the forum of murpheys law is starting to change my mind though. I'm having horrific visions of the check engine light coming on 5 days after I finish it all up.

If you do not replace the sensor it may fail in a week or may last another year or two. You just need to ask yourself how you will feel if it fails next week and you have to do this all again when you can spend $50-$60 and have alittle more peace of mind.

It always possible the new sensor could fail too though.:munch:
