Does anyone know if any of the parts from the 96 and up SHOs (other than engine parts) fit on a 96 Mercury Sables?

I don't think the exhaust from the V-6 (manual or automatic) would fit since it's a different chassis. The V-8 exhaust may bolt to the body but I don't know if will couple to the Vulcan y-pipe. I would not matter anyway, the V-8s SHOs have 3 converters just like yours. You may want to ask around on the Taurus Car Club of America forum, they would have much more usable info about modding your motor.

Buy a SHO  .

It will beat him and no one will suspect, at least till they see the motor.

Yes I second this...the SHO is the ultimate sleeper. I think a lot of people forget this...some of my 'car guy' friends *still* don't understand it's a sleeper even with it's minimal 'car guy' reputation...whenever I bring it in, someone always says "is this the sho?" ...yeah, it says "sho" from every direction except the front, and people still ask this when it's parked..I love it!!! I think it looks 100% different from a regular taurus! There's no rule that you have to show your motor :p buy an SHO, convert it back to "regular" taurus status with your existing front end. That is probably more worthwhile than swapping a SHO motor into your regular...

i dont have the money to go out and buy a SHO otherwise i would. i was just wondering what if the parts from the suspension were compatible thats all. as fo swapping motors i had thought about it but i found that the motors and trannys by themselves cost almost as much as the whole car. im just tryiong to build a budget racer.

I understand the budget thing but you can pick up a 89-95 SHO for under 2K easly if you can do a little wrenching.

the exhaust is actually pretty good restriction, just putting high flow mufflers on it will yeald 2 miles per gallon at least thats what I always read on the TCCA (taurus car club) so that has got to be good for some power. K&N filter and remove the intake silencer (not good for any power but it sounds cool) i'm not so sure that the vulcans have 3 cats i'm 99% sure they only have 1 and the rear bank has to go through some pretty bad bends to get to the cat but it is a huge cat.

recap.
get high flow mufflers
good airfilter (or at least a clean one)
remove intake silencer)

edit: just realized this is in the suspention section. any suspention from any gen 3 (96-99) taurus will fit on your car, the brakes from a 3rd gen SHO would be a great upgrade (have them on my car) but they wont make you any faster they will just make you stop a lot faster :) , any interior/exterior parts will swap. simply put everything except the engine and related engine parts are a direct swap.

Sounds like a great money pit project to me. Why don't you just let him beat you and save your coin for something better down the road?
