For what it's worth, I couldn't get that grommet through the firewall with the dashboard removed, and the interior and engine bay gutted.

Glad to hear it's fixed.

Yeah, that grommet is a huge pain. The first couple times I replaced the cable, I just left it loose. I got smart the last time though, and broke out some grease. I greased both the grommet and the firewall, and installed the grommet before installing the cable. Then I threw some more grease on the cable and in the grommet, and I was able to install the cable without pulling the grommet out again in the process.

Definitely get that grommet seated correctly. It helps to locate the cable at the pedal end, which will prevent binding. The cable that snapped on me last year was brand new a year or two prior. It snapped at the pedal end because it was binding and I didn't know it.
