So I just purchased a '92 MTX with a busted clutch cable. I've never tackled anything regarding transmissions before, and I'm coming up about an inch short with my new clutch cable from RockAuto (gauranteed to fit, so I think I'm doing something wrong on my end...). After much shimmy-ing around and contortion, I finally got the cable routed correctly and attached to the blue adjuster quadrant or whatever it's called. Trouble is, it needs to go another inch or so to attach to the clutch assist lever. The lever's got about 1/2" to 3/4" of play (very light - i.e. no resistance). Is this normal, or is it something internal to the trans. that isn't catching? Here's a pic of what I'm dealing with, I've really got to get this together and get it going. I don't know what I'm missing that's causing this grief. Thanks.

You need to lift up on the pedal, then push the blue quadrant back to get some slack in the cable to get it over the fork.

It definitely takes two people.

Shouldn't just pulling on the cable by yourself rotate the pedal around to give you enough slack to attach it? I'll try to get another hand, but so far it's just my fiancee and myself, and she hates going near this thing ;)...maybe it'll be a good chance for her to get her hands dirty though. Another question though, is that normal to have that play in the fork/clutch assist lever?

In order to be able to pull on the cable, you need to have someone lift the pedal to release the adjuster.

Play is normal without the cable attached. Get the cable attached and adjusted and it will be gone.

It's really simple, but if she's that reluctant to help, you could probably tie the pedal up with some rope.

Use any type of tool you have to put under the clutch petal and hold it in the up position.

It now is a one person job.
